About this role

We're looking for a BESS Specialist to be the technical lead on a utility-scale battery energy storage system connected to the high voltage network. In this role you'll own the integration of battery and power conversion equipment with the MV collector system, HV substation and grid connection, from concept design right through to commissioning and handover. You'll be the key link between the battery/PCS OEM, our primary and secondary design teams, the network service provider and the construction team. Some of your key accountabilities will include:

  • Lead the technical integration of OEM battery enclosures and PCS/inverter units into the balance-of-plant design
  • Define and verify the collector system: main power transformer, 33 kV switchboards, RMUs, step-up transformers and LV connections to the PCS
  • Confirm equipment ratings against short-circuit, load flow and cable/transformer loading studies, including PCS fault contribution during fault ride-through
  • Drive battery yard layouts for maintenance access, fire separation, crane corridors and AS 2067 clearances
  • Support the NER connection process, including Generator Performance Standards and grid-forming capability
  • Coordinate power system studies (load flow, harmonics, reactive capability, dynamic performance) with OEM-supplied PSS®E and PSCAD models
  • Lead safety-in-design for BESS hazards such as thermal runaway, LV arc flash, transformer failure and fire spread
  • Review design packages at 30%, 80% and IFC, and support procurement with specifications, tender evaluations and vendor document reviews
  • Oversee FAT, site testing, energisation, commissioning and R2/hold-point testing with the network service provider

How you can support CoMade

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical or Power Systems)
  • CPEng / NER chartered, or eligible, plus RPEQ or state registration where required
  • Min 8+ years in HV power engineering, including 3+ years on utility-scale BESS, solar or wind connections in the NEM or equivalent markets
  • At least one grid-connected BESS taken through design, commissioning and GPS compliance
  • Experience working with battery OEMs and network service providers
  • Strong knowledge of lithium-ion BESS, PCS/inverter control (grid-following and grid-forming), and HV/MV systems from 480 V to 66 kV and above
  • Working knowledge of AS 2067, AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 7000, AS 1940, AS 3008/IEC 60287 and the National Electricity Rules
  • Ability to interpret and review studies in ETAP, PowerFactory, PSS®E or PSCAD
