What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a driven early-career PhD scientist to advance our understanding of climate predictability and attribution. In this role, you will investigate the North Atlantic’s extratropical ocean–atmosphere interactions, exploring the drivers of climate variability across multi-annual to multi-decadal timescales.

As a hub for operational decadal forecasting and international research, CMCC’s CLIVAP division offers a vibrant environment for an early-career scientist. Here, you will contribute to high-level European and multi-national collaborations, developing services that directly support climate adaptation. This position provides a strong platform to gain experience and perspective within the evolving field of climate dynamics and predictability.

ROLE

Reporting to the CLIVAP Director, the Research Scientist will contribute to the Decadal Prediction unit's research agenda. In this role, you will produce original research on climate attribution and predictability, focusing on how ocean–atmosphere interactions shape our climate across multi-annual to multi-decadal timescales.

Responsibilities

As a member of the CLIVAP division, the Research Scientist will work within a network of EU projects and international collaborations. In this role, you will support the group’s ongoing climate predictability studies while developing original research to advance the division's scientific goals.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Environmental Sciences, specifically in a climate-related field
  • A strong publication record as first author, relative to your years of postdoctoral experience
  • Specialized experience in extratropical ocean–atmosphere interactions (strongly preferred)
  • Technical expertise in Python and the processing of large-scale climate datasets
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal

Duration, Compensation & Benefits

  • Eligibility & Location: This opportunity is open to both internal and external candidates and will be based at CMCC’s Bologna office
  • Contract & Compensation: The initial appointment is for 24 months, with a gross annual salary ranging from 32.000 to 42.000 Euros, depending on qualifications and postdoctoral experience
  • Career Path: For those appointed as junior researchers, tenure may be granted within two to four years of joining the division

  • Benefits & Support: A comprehensive welfare package is provided for contracts of 12 months or more, and we offer dedicated support during the immigration process if required
