ABOUT US
ClearSky is an environmental credits company with an office in Madrid and activity across Spain. We develop carbon absorption projects registered with MITECO, leasing, buying or partnering with landowners and communities to convert unproductive land into forest. We are now opening a second business line in the Spanish Energy Savings Certificates (CAE) market and are structuring our first energy efficiency projects, which we develop and finance with our own capital alongside execution partners.
THE ROLE
The role owns all GIS and cartographic work across the MITECO project portfolio: eligibility screening, registry file preparation, subsanacion management, V8 carbon calculator calibration, and technical coordination with forestry contractors and regional administrations. It reports to the group Chief Commercial Officer.
This is an operational and technical role, not a commercial one. The person works with data, cartography and regulatory documentation. The role carries direct responsibility for the quality and timeliness of the documentation submitted to MITECO and the regional governments.
DUTIES
- Run GIS eligibility analysis for new projects: overlay CORINE 1990, Mapa Forestal de Espana (MFE50), SIGPAC, Natura 2000, Catastro, LiDAR (where available), slope (MDT) and fire perimeter layers, applying MITECO V12 methodology criteria for Type A and Type B projects.
- Operate the OECC V8 carbon calculator for ex ante CO2 absorption estimates by project, calibrating species, densities, mortality and permanence horizons per the Cuadernos de Zona of each autonomous community.
- Prepare and maintain MITECO registry file documentation: technical reports, management plans (registry version), cartography in shapefile format (ETRS89/UTM), parcel sheets and cadastral references.
- Manage subsanacion rounds with OECC/MITECO: interpret requirements, prepare response documentation and coordinate with forestry contractors to obtain the necessary information.
- Coordinate with regional administrations (Junta de Castilla y Leon, Xunta de Galicia and others) on technical documentation, authorisations and permits, including montes de utilidad publica and Natura 2000 sites.
- Verify and process technical documentation delivered by forestry contractors: execution certificates, GIS cartography, photographic evidence, phytosanitary passports and work reports.
- Support technical evaluation of new project opportunities: preliminary eligibility screening on cadastral references or shapefiles provided by partners and landowners.
- Maintain the project portfolio cartographic database, kept current and documented.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A degree in Forestry Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in QGIS and/or ArcGIS: editing, geoprocessing, spatial analysis, shapefile handling, KML/KMZ, coordinate systems (ETRS89/UTM).
- Experience working with Spain's official geographic information layers: SIGPAC, Catastro, CORINE Land Cover, Mapa Forestal de Espana (MFE), IGN MDT/LiDAR, Natura 2000.
- Native or bilingual Castilian Spanish. Non-negotiable: counterparties are forestry engineers, contractors, regional civil servants and rural communities.
- Ability to work autonomously to strict regulatory deadlines.
- Driving licence and availability to travel to projects in rural areas.
DESIRABLE
- Direct experience with the MITECO carbon absorption registry (Registro de Huella de Carbono).
- Knowledge of the OECC V8 calculator or IPCC-based forest carbon quantification methodologies.
- Knowledge of the Cuadernos de Zona of Castilla y Leon and/or Galicia.
- Experience with the Spanish land registry (Registro de la Propiedad) and Catastro.
- Knowledge of Verra (VM0047 ARR) or other international carbon standards.
- COITF membership.
- Basic Python for GIS process automation.
- Reading-level English for internal documentation.
- Galician language.
WHAT WE OFFER
- A direct reporting line to the group Chief Commercial Officer.
- A permanent contract.
- Gross annual salary between EUR 25,000 and EUR 35,000 depending on experience.
- Domestic business travel covered, and reasonable pre-approved expenses in line with company policy.
- Laptop and mobile telephone provided.
SELECTION PROCESS
Two interviews and a short practical exercise on a real GIS analysis case, subject to a confidentiality agreement.
Alongside the CV, we would ask for a short note describing a project in which the candidate carried out GIS analysis applied to forestry, environmental or carbon projects, setting out the tools used, the layers processed and the result obtained.
