Clean Prosperity is a Canadian climate policy organization that advocates for pragmatic solutions to build the low-carbon economy. We work on market-oriented policies that incentivize private enterprise to compete, innovate, and invest in low-carbon technologies. We believe that decarbonizing the Canadian economy is a significant opportunity to generate economic growth across the country, for the benefit of all Canadians.

Over the last decade, we have built a strong track record of success, advancing policies that can move billions of dollars of capital into low-carbon projects. We are now seeking a Director of Development who can help tell our story of success in a way that will enable us to expand our impact even further.

As our Director of Development, you will be a key member of our team and will be integral to our efforts as we work to shape climate and energy policy in Canada. This is a new role for our organization. If you’re the right candidate, you’ll be excited about the opportunity to be part of growing Clean Prosperity’s capacity to influence Canadian climate policy.

Clean Prosperity is committed to diversity in its hiring processes. We welcome applications from members of visible minorities, First Nations, Métis, Inuit, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities, and others with the skills and knowledge to help provide a diverse range of perspectives and lived experiences.

The role

The Director of Development plays a key role in initiating, building, and maintaining excellent relationships with new and current Clean Prosperity donors, while also contributing to organization-wide policy objectives. You will ensure that Clean Prosperity has the resources it needs to work effectively. We expect that you will focus much of your effort on cultivating major gifts.

This role will report to the Vice President, Communications, and will work closely with our President and CEO and other members of our cross-Canada team. You will also have the opportunity to interact with our Board of Directors, especially the Board’s Fundraising Committee.

Key responsibilities

1. Strategy and leadership

  • Co-develop and execute a comprehensive annual fundraising plan to meet organizational budget targets.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to align fundraising efforts with the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to develop the communications collateral that persuasively tells the organization’s story to current and potential funders.
  • Establish key performance indicators for the development function and report on progress.

2. Major gifts and donor stewardship

  • Manage a portfolio of major donors; lead the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts.
  • Draft compelling cases for support, briefing notes, and personalized correspondence for high-net-worth prospects.
  • Ensure a high-touch donor experience, creating opportunities for donors to engage with our team and understand the impact of their support.

3. Grants and foundations

  • Identify grant opportunities from private foundations and other sources that align with Clean Prosperity’s research and advocacy objectives.
  • Oversee the writing and submission of high-quality grant proposals.
  • Manage grant reporting schedules to ensure compliance and timely updates to funders. Draft grant reports.

4. Operations and data

  • Manage the organization’s donor database.
  • With the Director of Operations, ensure compliance with donation requirements.

Skills and experience needed

The below list represents our ideal set of qualifications. We encourage you to apply if most of these are a fit, even if there are one or two that aren’t:

  • Experience: 7+ years of professional fundraising experience, with a proven track record in major gifts and/or foundation grants.
  • Results-oriented: Demonstrated success in closing six- and seven-figure gifts and meeting annual revenue targets.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, across online and in-person interaction.
  • Communication: Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills. You can translate complex policy ideas into compelling pitches for lay audiences. You are skilled at acting as an ambassador for the organization, telling our story, and persuading donors to support us.
  • Project management: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities independently.
  • Tools: Proficiency with Google Workspace/Microsoft Office and knowledge of CRM software.
  • Existing network of contacts within the Canadian philanthropic community.
  • Experience fundraising in the environmental, political, or public policy sectors is a strong asset.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is a strong asset.
  • CFRE certification is an asset.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada. Must reside in Canada.

Location, hours, and culture

We are a small team who support each other’s work, every day. Our team comes from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, and we bring those perspectives to every effort, making all our work better in the process.

We keep standard working hours based on employees’ local timezones, but are much more concerned about results than about how you organize your time. We are a people-focused organization: staff have flexibility in how they schedule their working hours.

Even though we’re virtual, you will interact regularly with the team. We hold weekly staff meetings, informal virtual meet-ups, and two in-person staff retreats per year across Canada.

The Director of Development may be expected to travel regularly across Canada to meet with existing and potential donors, among other objectives.

Compensation

Our proposed salary range for this position is $110,000-$130,000 and will be based on experience and the expertise you bring to this role. In addition to your salary, you will be entitled to a health benefits package, 20 days of vacation annually, and we will also provide you with what you need for your home office.
