Planner Job Description

Civix is a professional services and technology firm with offices in New Orleans, Louisiana and Florida. This position is fully remote but may require occasional travel for client needs.

Civix’s Community Planning & Resilience division includes community planners, federal grants management experts, and software services providers who deliver diverse services to support our clients. Our portfolio includes projects within urban planning, housing, community engagement, disaster recovery, hazard mitigation, climate action, and grants management.

The Planner role requires an individual with a strong analytical background in housing, climate adaptation and resilience, and/or community development and interest in disaster recovery and grant management. The Community Planning & Resilience Division includes urban planning, policy, and grant management projects, and the Planner position will provide support across program areas. Prior experience in public sector consulting, grant management, and technical assistance is highly preferred.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct data collection, synthesis, and reporting using a variety of data sources.
  • Coordinate data collection, statistical analysis, and data visualization using a variety of data sources and tools (including Geographic Information Systems).
  • Conduct research and analysis for clients, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Draft plans, reports, and assessments based on research and analysis.
  • Develop presentations of research and analysis for clients, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Draft documents, memos, letters, and other formal communications to clients.
  • Provide support and facilitate internal and client-facing meetings, workshops, and presentations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings and community engagement efforts.
  • Independently manage assigned project tasks and timelines.
  • Capture, compile, and edit notes from internal meetings and external meetings with clients.
  • Support Project Managers as needed in the delivery of services to clients.

Requirements

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills with an attention for detail.
  • Proficient in the use Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Proficient in data visualization and document design and formatting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience developing and drafting reports, regulatory analyses, and technical assistance guidance materials.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, effectively communicate, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Capable of retrieving, analyzing, and synthesizing data in an efficient, clear, and meaningful way.
  • Effective project and task management skills, as well as the ability to move seamlessly between projects, tasks, and subject matter.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented and ability to self-organize and self-direct project tasks assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree required and a preference for Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Real Estate, Geography, Urban Studies, or similar discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in community planning, housing, climate resilience, or grant management.

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Proficient in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience working with federal programs or planning processes, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and/or the Department of Energy (DOE).
  • Experience in housing, community development, HUD programs, and/or grant management.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and communities to engage them in planning and development processes.
  • Interest in current best practices across planning, sustainability and resilience, public sector management, and organizational development.
