As an Energy Management Engineer, you will participate in a variety of energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission related projects to support infrastructure and servicing planning, energy efficiency and recovery initiatives, and GHG emissions reducing actions in the lines of service in water, wastewater, and stormwater. You will provide project management and technical support to projects including auditing, assessment, implementation, and operational optimization in the Water Utility. Primary duties include:

  • Plan and manage projects in conceptual and/or preliminary design. Conduct field investigations, modeling analysis, options analysis, life cycle cost analysis, risk assessments, project cost estimates, and engagement with interested parties.
  • Utilize Corporate Project Management Framework (CPMF) project management tools, processes and forms including Procurement processes, Stage Gate 1 or Stage Gate 2 requests, and preparation of handover documents for project delivery.
  • Develop business cases to support investment planning decisions in servicing planning, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation projects.
  • Monitor and analyze water facilities' energy performance indicators to support operational optimizations. Prioritize the recommendations.
  • Prepare in-house studies, develop technical memoranda, presentations, and updates.
  • Assist interested parties within the City in data analysis and the delivery of recommendations in energy management and GHG emission reductions.
  • Research and explore innovative technologies potentially implementable at The City's water facilities.
  • Act as the section representative at project meetings with consultants and contractors.
  • Communicate information with provided guidance to senior level leadership and the public as required.
  • Visit the water facilities including the treatment plants, pump stations and storm ponds (within the City's boundary) as required.


Qualifications

  • A degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or a related Engineering field, registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada, and current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or licensure by the first day of work.   • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending.
  • Access to a personal vehicle for business use is an asset.
  • Experience and/or education in hydraulic and electric engineering will be considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be an asset: energy efficiency, energy recovery, GHG emission reduction, water, wastewater, and stormwater systems.
  • Success in this position requires strong abilities in strategic and critical thinking, excellent communication, change management, relationship building and engaging with others.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.


Working Conditions: Office environment with field visits and site inspections as required.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
