About Our Organization

Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing clean, affordable and reliable energy policies rooted in conservative principles. We work to promote solutions that reduce emissions, strengthen America’s energy security and drive economic growth. We lead initiatives that include policy research, public outreach campaigns and partnerships that drive innovation across all-of-the-above energy solutions, including renewables, nuclear, natural gas, carbon capture and other advanced technologies.


Scope of Work:

The Director of Communications reports to the Vice President of Communications and works closely with CRES’ communications consultants and CRES’ government relations, external relations and policy teams. The Director has an intensive writing portfolio, while overseeing all communications content creation, and ensures content flows efficiently throughout the organization and to external audiences. In addition, this position manages relationships with professional communicators on Capitol Hill and with allied organizations in DC and beyond the Beltway.

The Director of Communications will foster relationships with policymakers and stakeholders, prioritizing engagement with conservative and Republican audiences to amplify CRES’s mission and policy initiatives. This position requires demonstrated experience working with or within Republican or conservative political environments, highlighting a strong ability to build partnerships and advance communications strategies in support of policy objectives.

The Director of Communications will lead with strategic vision while driving actionable results, addressing the need for stronger team influence and enhanced relationship-building to align efforts with the organization’s mission. This position calls for a forward-thinking leader who excels at crafting strategies, fostering connections, and guiding teams toward success through clear communication and collaborative engagement.


Responsibilities:

  • Draft high-level content such as op-eds, executive remarks and talking points, issue messaging, as well as materials such as the annual report, polling decks and briefing documents
  • Oversee the creation of communications materials such as press releases, newsletters, blogs, videos, social media posts and website updates
  • Pitch written products to leading national and local outlets
  • Oversee the CRESponsible Leader of the Month program
  • Engage and act as the primary contact with communications staff with select members to build and promote CRES’ messaging on Capitol Hill and across states and districts
  • Work with congressional staff to identify best idea for joint engagement (op-ed, interview, questionnaire)
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the House and Senate through collaboration
  • Help facilitate the Cool Conservative Communicators Collaborating on Climate Change with CRES (C6WC) events and programming
  • Serve as main editor for programmatic emails for events including National Clean Energy Week, Energy Leadership Summit, CRES Academy and CRES Forum engagements
  • Implement communications strategies and tactics to support CRES’ mission and goals
  • Engage in daily communications strategies on key legislative issues
  • Support communications functions at CRES and CRES-sponsored events
  • Manage external communications consultants to ensure deliverables meet expectations
  • Oversee distribution list management, working closely with other departments to ensure growth and accuracy
  • Provide input to the Vice President of Communications for the development of CRES’ communications workplan, including goal setting and tracking metrics
  • Support External Relations team with information needed for grant applications and reports
  • Ensure CRES brand and style guidelines are adhered to for all external content
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • At least eight years of experience including time as a communications director, press secretary or similar role on Capitol Hill, at a high-profile government agency or for a high-profile public figure or corporation
  • Proven experience working with or within Republican or conservative political environments, demonstrating a strong ability to build relationships and effectively advance policy objectives
  • At least a four-year college degree in a relevant field of study
  • Strong writing and editing skills, particularly for news outlet publications
  • Demonstrated track record of developing advocacy messaging and talking points on newsworthy topics from a conservative point of view
  • Incredible attention to detail and process-management skills – must have a proven record of accomplishment of shepherding projects from conception to successful execution
  • Experience working directly with principal-level officials for public events and media interviews
  • Professional relationships with senior policy and communications staff on Capitol Hill
  • Ability to execute a departmental strategic plan that aligns with the organization's mission and goals
  • Working knowledge of climate and energy issues
  • Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently; ability to successfully juggle multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software
  • Ability to travel to out-of-state conferences


Competitive Salary & Benefits:

The base salary is budgeted between $100,000 to $120,000.
