Role Title: Backend Engineer (.NET / Cloud / Distributed Systems / AI)
Function: Technology/R&D
Reports to: CTO
Territories: UK
Context and role objectives:
Amidst the many factors contributing to the climate crisis, the significant role of industrial supply chains can no longer be ignored.
At Circulor, we provide one of the most complete and mature solutions to this global challenge. Our platform enables organisations to gain deep visibility into their supply chains—supporting responsible sourcing, improving ESG performance, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and proactively managing supply chain risk.
A key part of this mission is enabling Digital Product Passports (DPPs) — a foundational capability for the future of sustainable and transparent supply chains. DPPs provide a structured, verifiable record of a product’s lifecycle, including provenance, environmental impact, and compliance data, helping organisations meet evolving regulatory requirements and consumer expectations.
As a Backend Engineer, you will play a critical role in building and scaling the systems that power this mission. You will design and develop high-performance, cloud-native, and AI-enabled services that process complex supply chain data and underpin the creation and management of Digital Product Passports.
This role goes beyond traditional backend engineering. You will:
- Build systems that enable end-to-end traceability and Digital Product Passports (DPPs)
- Contribute to climate-impacting technology used by global enterprises
- Ensure data integrity, transparency, and trust across complex supply chains
- Help scale a platform at the intersection of sustainability, data, AI, and regulation
Your work will directly support the transition toward more ethical, transparent, and low-carbon supply chains, while enabling the next generation of digitally traceable products.
Key tasks & responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using C# and .NET (8+)
- Build and evolve RESTful and GraphQL APIs (Hot Chocolate preferred)
- Architect and implement event-driven systems using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or SQS
- Develop cloud-native applications on AWS (Lambda, SQS, etc.)
- Design and optimize data access layers using Entity Framework, MongoDB, and Redis
- Integrate and deploy AI/ML-powered features into backend systems
- Build and maintain AI-enabled services (e.g. recommendation systems, automation, intelligent workflows)
- Implement LLM integrations (e.g. OpenAI, Bedrock) and manage prompt orchestration
- Design scalable pipelines for AI inference and data processing
- Own services end-to-end, including deployment, monitoring, and scaling
- Contribute to system design decisions and architectural evolution
Key experience and skills:
Core Backend
- Strong experience with C# and .NET Core / .NET 8+
- Solid understanding of OOP, design patterns, and clean architecture
- Experience with Entity Framework or similar ORM tools
- Strong experience designing REST APIs
- Hands-on experience with GraphQL (schema design, resolvers, Hot Chocolate preferred)
- Experience building event-driven architectures
- Hands-on with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or AWS SQS
- Understanding of asynchronous systems and message-driven design
- Experience integrating AI/ML models into production systems
- Familiarity with LLM APIs (e.g. OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI)
- Understanding of:
- Prompt engineering
- Embeddings & vector search
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architectures
- Experience building AI pipelines (data ingestion, inference, evaluation)
- Experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB)
- Experience with Redis (caching, pub/sub)
- Strong experience with AWS (Lambda, SQS, cloud deployments)
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible)
- Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, TeamCity, etc.)
- Experience with monitoring and logging tools (Grafana, Loki, CloudWatch)
- Familiarity with distributed tracing and OpenTelemetry
Salary range
£50,000 to £70,000 a year
About Circulor
Founded in 2017, Circulor is on a mission to make global supply chains more responsible and sustainable. We are the leader in bringing traceability and sustainability to supply chains — empowering businesses to track materials, measure environmental impact, and ensure ethical sourcing practices.
Our platform enables companies to issue and manage Digital Product Passports (DPPs) and provides end-to-end Supply Chain Trust & Assurance — giving organisations verifiable proof of where materials come from, how they were produced, and whether they meet evolving regulatory requirements. We work with global leaders across automotive, EV batteries, energy storage, and industrials.
The scale of what we’ve built speaks for itself: over 2.6 billion traceability data points, 623 million traceability records, and data flowing from more than 150 active facilities worldwide. We launched the world’s first full-scale Battery Passport for production vehicles in partnership with Volvo Cars.
If you want your engineering work to have real-world impact, this is where it happens.
