What You’ll Be Doing

Global Operational and Enterprise Risk Management (GOERM) is responsible for the oversight of all enterprise-wide operational risks globally and establishes and provides an independent risk perspective and ongoing strategic direction for various enterprise risk functions, while providing overall leadership to risk-wide business management and transformation activities. As the Senior Manager of Environmental Risk within GOERM, you will be responsible for developing and enhancing policies and standards, managing climate-related risks and opportunities, and improving CIBC’s performance, disclosures, and reputation related to catastrophic risk management, including physical climate risks. You will also be responsible for embedding climate risk insights into enterprise-wide decision making through the development of applicable risk policies/standards and the development of mitigation and adaptation strategies.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Analytical thinking – Translate and interpret abstract or theoretical information with a high level of attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency. Translate complex technical or scientific findings into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences, including executives and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Communication and collaboration – Apply your excellent verbal and writing skills to effectively articulate ideas and opinions that involve analysis, interpretation, and assessment to others with different disciplinary backgrounds. Develop internal and external communications to promote CIBC’s environmental initiatives and achievements. Represent CIBC on industry committees and working groups established to develop, pilot, and implement tools, guidance, and standards that support the assessment and management of physical climate risks. Interact with environmental risk managers and peers at other major financial institutions for the purpose of exchanging information and collaborating on industry initiatives. Develop communication strategies to inform internal stakeholder on industry and regulatory insights related to environmental risk including catastrophic risks. Support climate scenario analysis process by assessing industry best practices related to environmental risk management, including catastrophic risk. Utilize strategic skills to support the development of climate adaptation/ resilience opportunities into our operations and lending portfolios.

Actively engages and collaborates with teams across the bank to achieve results. Provide support and subject matter expertise for the effective management of climate-related risks. Partner with internal teams to embed climate metrics into strategic decisions. Apply your expertise in environmental and climate risk management to influence the development of physical risk assessment standards, procedures and controls.
  • Reporting – Support the development of content for internal and external reporting including CIBC’s Sustainability Report, external press releases and Environment website. Perform peer benchmarking and research reports related to climate related risk. Support the AVP in the preparation of environmental reporting for senior executives and board committees.

Who You Are

  • You can demonstrate 5-7 years of experience, in environmental risk or climate science with a working knowledge of industry-wide environmental policies, practices and reporting frameworks. You have a strong knowledge of environmental and climate-related regulations and understand the impacts of climate risks and how to implement climate insights into risk management frameworks and decision-making processes and tools.
  • You have a degree/diploma in preferably Engineering, Sustainability, Climate Science or related field.
  • You know details matter. You notice things that others don't. Your critical thinking skills help to inform your decision making.
  • You give meaning to data. You enjoy investigating complex problems, and making sense of information. You're confident in your ability to communicate detailed information in an impactful way. You have familiarity with climate risk models, scenario analysis, and decarbonization initiatives. You are proficient in data science and statistical analysis technologies.
  • Your influence makes a difference. You know that relationships and networks are essential to success. You inspire outcomes by sharing your expertise. You frequently engage with both internal and external partners to align and execute on projects.
