Chemours is seeking an R&D Staff Engineer to join our growing Thermal and Specialized Solutions (TSS) team! This position will report directly to the Global Core Services Manager at our R&D Discovery Hub in Newark, DE location .
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Work on developing next-generation refrigerants focusing on flammability characteristics of new molecules or blends understanding the current market
* To conduct standardized tests to understand the flammability properties of neat refrigerants and blends, foam expansion agents, specialty fluids, etc. These include but are not limited to burning velocity, lower flammability limit, worst case of formulation for flammability, worst case of fractionation for flammability, etc.
* Develop novel tests and techniques for characterizing flammability, reactivity, ignition energy, and other relevant properties for existing and new refrigerants.
* To interface with colleagues in TSS R&D and Technical Service organization to set the objectives and priorities for the various tests. To provide data to guide research programs, to support patent applications, as well as to address technical questions by our external customers.
* Collaborate with industry and regulatory bodies, certification agencies, and national and international research facilities to keep abreast of changes in flammability testing, classifications and safety guidelines.
* To plan and conduct experiments independently, collect necessary data, organize/record the data, share conclusions broadly and continue experiments as needed with minimal guidance from supervision.
* To ensure the various laboratory measurement systems are in good working condition and to make upgrades as needed.
The following is required for this role:
* PHD degree in Engineering - Chemical, Mechanical, Fire Safety or a related field.
* 3+ years of post-doctorate experience in flammability testing, combustion, or related areas in chemical, automotive, HVAC or other equipment manufacturing industries.
* Familiarity with UL, ASHRAE, ASTM, and ISO flammability classification methods.
* Strong fundamental knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer (knowledge of refrigerant related properties is a bonus).
* Strong mechanical ability to set up, maintain, fix and troubleshoot flammability equipment.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work well with all levels in the organization.
* Record of effectively communicating flammability related technical information to external audience to drive the innovation to next generation of refrigerants.
* Self-motivated, customer focused and ability to independently achieve results.
* Ability to work in teams and work in a collaborative environment. Demonstrated skills in multitasking and planning/organizing.
* Demonstrated problem-solving/troubleshooting and data analysis skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication.
The following is preferred for this role:
* Experience with handling gaseous reagents and highly hazardous materials such as HF and HCl.
* Familiarity with design of experiments and other statistical techniques.
* Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics and other modeling techniques.
* Familiarity with refrigerant systems for stationary, commercial, or automotive applications.
