Controller

About the Organization

A respected and mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned accounting professional who is passionate about supporting community-focused work while overseeing a strong, well-rounded finance function.

About the Role

The Controller will oversee all accounting, reporting, compliance, and budgeting activities. This role requires a hands-on leader who thrives in a collaborative environment and can support both strategic initiatives and daily accounting operations. The ideal candidate will have prior nonprofit experience and a strong understanding of fund accounting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including A/P, A/R, payroll, grants management, and general ledger maintenance .

  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes and prepare timely financial statements.

  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning , working closely with organizational leadership.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP , nonprofit accounting standards, and fund accounting requirements.

  • Oversee grant tracking, restricted/unrestricted fund reporting, and audit preparation .

  • Coordinate with external auditors and manage the annual audit process.

  • Prepare financial reports for the Board of Directors , executive leadership, and funding partners.

  • Implement and maintain internal controls, policies, and financial procedures.

  • Supervise and develop accounting staff; provide guidance and training as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or MBA preferred.

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience , with nonprofit or fund accounting strongly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit reporting requirements .

  • Experience with grant reporting and restricted/unrestricted fund management .

  • Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., MIP Fund Accounting, Blackbaud, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct).

  • Strong Excel skills and the ability to analyze financial data for leadership decision-making.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
