Your New Company

CATL is a global group specialised in leading battery manufacturing technologies.

We are looking to hire a Technical Design Manager/Engineer to join our team to support and assist our Grid and Project Development Teams on a portfolio of various projects across EU.

As we grow, we will also be expanding into new markets and there will be opportunities to contribute to this expansion.

The role will be part of a very impressive and capable Renewable Project Development team. You will need to be ready to work in a flexible environment where everyone is aligned to company development.

The role

You will lead the technical design of our transmission-connected BESS projects from tendering to start of construction, and provide engineering support from RtB through to COD. You turn each project's Employer's Requirements into a feasible engineering plan and lead the technical interface with every engineering stakeholder: client, technical advisor, TSO, EPC and BOP contractors.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as technical lead from project tendering to start of construction, and provide end-to-end engineering support from RtB to COD.
  • Coordinate the project team and lead the technical interface with all engineering stakeholders: client, technical advisor (TA), TSO, EPC and BOP contractors.
  • Convert Employer's Requirements (ER) into a feasible engineering plan, and raise clarifications and deviations early.
  • Develop concept designs for transmission-connected BESS: project sizing, initial concept design, single-line diagrams (SLDs) and layouts.
  • Work with designers and lead designers to deliver the electrical design: primary design, HV and MV equipment sizing, key component specifications, load flow and short circuit studies, protection and control concept, metering concept and grid strategy.
  • Develop the basic civil concept with civil engineers, including site layout, foundations, cable routes and drainage.
  • Identify BESS permitting pinch points early, such as fire safety, separation distances and noise, and reflect them in the design.
  • Develop EPC RfP documents and lead technical contract negotiations.

Requirements

  • Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years in electrical design or engineering management on utility-scale BESS, renewables or HV substation projects, including at least one transmission-connected project.
  • Strong electrical design knowledge: HV/MV primary design, equipment sizing, earthing, protection and control, and metering.
  • Able to lead and review load flow and short circuit studies, and translate grid requirements into design.
  • Experience developing concept designs, SLDs and layouts, and turning ERs into engineering scope.
  • Basic civil design knowledge: site layout, foundations, cable routes and drainage.
  • Good understanding of BESS technology: battery, BMS, PCS, EMS, transformers and auxiliary systems.
  • Experience writing EPC tender documents and negotiating technical contract terms.
  • Strong stakeholder management and coordination skills; excellent written and spoken English.

Nice to have

  • Civil design experience.
  • Knowledge of BESS permitting and fire safety requirements in one or more markets.
  • Experience on the technical advisor, EPC or OEM side of BESS projects.
  • Grid code knowledge in one or more markets.
  • Familiarity with design and study tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP or PowerFactory.
