Role Introduction

The Head of Climate Action sits under the Group Sustainability Department is accountable for the development and implementation of Cathay Group’s overall climate change strategy. This includes strategising the reduction of Cathay’s carbon footprint to meet the company’s target of ‘net zero carbon emissions by 2050’, carbon offset strategy, climate risk management, climate adaptation and resilience, as well as carbon emissions related policy lobbying and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the team to fulfill all climate change related disclosure and compliance requirements, including related audits and assurance
  • Lead the preparation of climate change related content and data preparation for annual sustainability report, submission of annual filing for CORSIA, EU / UK ETS, EU/ UK SAF Mandate, and other mandatory climate disclosure
  • Lead further development in SAF accounting, sustainability criteria, and drive continuous improvements of SAF operations and assurance process internally; and take part in external meetings and forum to keep abreast of the latest development in these areas, and to make contribution to industry standard developments in these areas to ensure Cathay and airlines’ concerns are taken into full considerations
  • Develop carbon offset strategy and implementation plan for mandatory requirements (CORSIA, EU/ UK ETS). Develop our position and response to CORSIA and other applicable mandatory carbon offset schemes, strategic development and execution for sourcing carbon credits
  • Participate in industry forums to keep abreast of regulation development, and to help shape future industry standards and related policy to ensure Cathay is well positioned. Include but not limited to International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO, International Air Transport Association IATA, and Association of Asia Pacific Airlines AAPA)
  • Oversee the Group-wide climate change roadmap, driving emissions reduction across aviation and the wider value chain, with targeted engagement and advocacy on enabling infrastructure where required to support the Group’s decarbonisation pathway
  • Partner with Cathay Cargo in sustainability initiatives, influencing the cargo value chain to support the group’s climate and circularity initiatives
  • Drive alignment of the aviation supply chain with the Group’s climate strategy, working with internal and external partners to support sustainable aviation fuel adoption, emissions reduction, and circularity across the value chain
  • Build and lead a capable Climate Action team through coaching, performance management and talent development, ensuring sustainable delivery of the Group’s climate commitments and regulatory responsibilities

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 year of relevant experience in aviation, climate change, sustainable development, or environmental affairs
  • At least 5 years should be at managerial or leadership capacity to manage direct reports
  • University graduate in related discipline of environmental science, environmental management, or sustainability
  • Ability to engage at the C-Suite level. A strategic thinker and good planner, with deep understanding of climate change, change management, and cross-sectoral partnership
  • Great people skills; including the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders, and to facilitate and lead cross-functional initiatives; and strong commercial acumen
  • Knowledge of climate science, climate related regulatory requirements, sustainable aviation fuel, carbon trading and offset, and/or the aviation industry would be of advantage
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English. Knowing Chinese and Mandarin will be a plus
