About us

At Carbonyx, we believe there is an opportunity to scale carbon removal by embedding it into the production of essential materials. We are pioneering electrochemical technology that makes these materials by combining atmospheric CO2 with industrial waste. Our process inherently separates product streams, enabling us to provide high grade, industry-ready materials with negative carbon emissions built-in. Following a recent financing round, Carbonyx is now in an exciting growth phase. We are building and scaling our technology toward the commercialization of our carbon-negative materials.

Our team is composed of highly motivated scientists and engineers who are experts in the fields of electrochemistry, carbon capture, conversion, and storage. We value creativity, innovation, and integrity and are looking to build a team of diverse, sharp individuals committed to advancing climate solutions.

Position overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Process Engineer to lead the development, optimization, and scale-up of our reactor technology. This is a hands-on role that sits at the intersection of R&D, scale-up and deployment. In this role, you will develop and scale chemical dissolution and precipitation processes to enable continuous carbon removal and materials production. You will play a critical role in building, operating, and improving our process from lab to pilot scale, working closely with the founding team to bring Carbonyx technology to market. As a small and agile team, you will be working directly with the technical founding team in shaping the future and direction of the technology and products.

Key Responsibilities

Process Design & Engineering

  • Design process systems for our carbon mineralization technology including developing PFDs, P&IDs, BOMs, and system layouts to enable scale-up from lab to pilot
  • Develop dissolution, precipitation, carbon capture, and other reactors including geometry, materials selection, kinetics, and operating envelopes
  • Integrate electrochemical systems into broader process designs, ensuring compatibility across upstream and downstream operations
  • Define instrumentation requirements for process monitoring and control, including sensor selection, placement, and integration into the control system
  • Support techno-economic analysis (TEA), life-cycle analysis (LCA), feasibility studies and process modelling to guide scale decisions and inform operating cost projections

Scale-up & Commissioning

  • Lead scale-up activities from bench through to pilot plant, including equipment selection, procurement, commissioning, operations and testing
  • Manage contractor and EPC relationships to support detailed engineering, system and facility design
  • Assist with the assembly, plumbing, and building of various process test platforms, reactors and systems
  • Partner with R&D to refine reaction conditions, evaluate process sensitivities, and support technology transfer from lab to pilot scale
  • Monitor and identify key process parameters and performance to drive continuous improvements, failure reduction and support R&D efforts
  • Champion process safety through HAZID/HAZOP procedures, adherence to codes and standards and application of safe design principles

Qualifications
  • BASc. in Chemical Engineering or related field; advanced degree and ability to register as a P.Eng. with EGBC is an asset
  • 5+ years experience in process development, pilot plant design and commissioning, or industrial process scale-up; startup experience is an asset
  • Strong hands-on capability, comfortable building, testing, and operating systems
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment
  • Have a strong sense of ownership over their work

Demonstrated experience in:

  • Reactor and process design for dissolution, precipitation, and solid/liquid separation unit operations; electrochemical, alkaline CO2 capture or mineral processing systems are an asset
  • Impurity removal, hydrometallurgical processing or related wet chemistry operations.
  • Instrumentation, process monitoring, and control system integration.
  • Process documentation including PFDs, P&IDs, and SOPs
  • Failure analysis, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement methodologies

We are looking for individuals who:
  • Are ambitious, proactive, and excited by difficult technical challenges
  • Thrive in collaborative, fast-moving environments
  • Take ownership and move work forward with a high degree of accountability
  • Enjoy building systems from the ground up and contributing wherever needed
  • Care deeply about developing technologies that can have meaningful climate impact

What we offer:
  • A competitive salary + employee stock options
  • 3 weeks vacation, plus time off during the winter holiday season
  • Flex time
