We are looking for an experienced Senior Director to lead our Communications function and help the organization meet ambitious goals that will have enormous positive benefits for the environment and all living beings. With a keen focus on excellence, the CALSTART Senior Director of Communications will lead the development, implementation, evaluation, and execution of communications strategic plans that support CALSTART and its various programs and initiatives. Working across CALSTART and overseeing the communications and marketing staff, the Senior Director will design multi-faceted communications initiatives ensuring the various plans are well-coordinated.
We are looking for someone who enjoys the challenge of capturing the organization's voice through creative and compelling storytelling while working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and passionate environment.
Ideally, this position will be based in California in commuting proximity to the Berkeley or Pasadena offices. Being based in those areas is not a requirement.
In this dynamic role, our new communications leader will:

  • Plan and lead strategic communications, public relations, and marketing strategies, initiatives, projects, and programs at the regional, national, and global level
  • Help manage and oversee the servicing of the external communication needs of CALSTART initiatives, activities, and regional offices
  • Oversee a team of more than fifteen communications and marketing professionals to create and execute communications and marketing strategies across public relations, public affairs, communications, social and digital channels, creative asset development, internal and external events, and publications
  • Drive efforts to advance, distinguish and enhance the CALSTART brand by leading, managing, and executing all communications to the public across all media and platforms
  • Increase overall awareness of the CALSTART brand among target audiences through media relations, public affairs activities, brand building activities, events, publications, and other programs and activities
  • Develop and lead a consistent and comprehensive social media strategy that advances CALSTART strategic plan
  • Function as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders across functions to ensure alignment and cohesive messaging
  • Oversee content creation and execution for our company and program websites, newsletters, and social media outlets
  • Oversee development of press releases and secure coverage in key media outlets
  • Design, develop and maintain cohesive presentation formats featuring our meetings, membership, education, journals, scientific policy, society initiatives, and clean transportation technology resources for outreach events
  • Oversee the staff performing communications functions and continue the building of a well-coordinated and highly functioning team

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of communications experience in multi platformed communications campaigns
  • 3+ years of experience working in clean transportation, clean energy, and/or sustainability
  • Proven ability developing strategic communications plans and implement them across a team of professionals
  • Demonstrated ability for holistic, compelling, and consistent storytelling
  • Proven ability building and executing a cohesive social media strategy in support of communications plans
  • Experience overseeing website design, as well as content strategy and performance analytics
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience that builds a high level of organizational capacity and performance
  • Proven experience driving teamwork and collaboration across a matrixed organization
  • Strong ability to manage people and lead with influence
  • Expertise in stakeholder management that includes audiences of policy makers, elected officials, business and industry, nonprofit and advocacy organizations, communities, and customers.
  • Must be focused on data-driven results, deadline-driven, and solution-oriented
  • Exceptional project and time management skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
