About the Role:

The Drive to Zero program at CALSTART is seeking a highly motivated Data Research Intern to support key initiatives focused on zero-emission commercial vehicles. This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to data collection, analysis, and research efforts that advance global clean transportation. The intern will play a critical role in maintaining and expanding the Zero-Emission Technology Inventory (ZETI), conducting emissions reduction research, and supporting engagement with key stakeholders, particularly in Latin America, the Global South, and China. The role also includes data research contributions for the Bezos Earth Fund initiative.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Collect, validate, and analyze data on medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles, focusing on Latin America (LATAM).
  • Conduct desk research on LATAM OEMs, update vehicle data in the ZETI database and identify potential industry contacts.
  • Perform research on global emissions reduction strategies, synthesizing key data sources and literature reviews.
  • Support Global South engagement efforts related to clean transportation collaborations.
  • Assist in data research and analysis for the Bezos Earth Fund project, including database work and trend identification.
  • Conduct research and provide support for engagement with potential Chinese endorsers.
  • Provide general support for the Drive to Zero team’s initiatives as needed.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Data collection and validation, quantitative analysis, proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets, familiarity with databases.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, ability to synthesize large volumes of data into concise insights, and knowledge of emissions reduction policies and trends.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and mapping tools is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently and in a team, and proactive problem-solving abilities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Environmental Studies, Data Science, Public Policy, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience with research projects, particularly in transportation, sustainability, or climate-related fields.
  • Familiarity with global zero-emission vehicle markets, policies, or industry trends is highly desirable.
  • Language proficiency in Spanish or Chinese is a plus but not required.
CALSTART values transparency and strives to provide as much information regarding compensation as possible. The complete salary range for this role is $19.00 - $20.00 per hour. Pay is determined based on several factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, qualifications, experience, education, internal equity and other factors relevant to the job.
