Senior Mechanical Engineer, Electrochemical Cell Design
Redwood Materials is seeking a mechanical engineer with extensive experience in designing electrochemical cells and systems. This role drives the design and deployment of electrochemical systems to convert lithium-ion battery waste material into useful products. You will optimize cell designs and develop custom balance-of-plant equipment to support material conversion processes, aligning with business goals. You will manage designs through the full lifecyclefrom concept through prototype, testing, pilot, and commercial installation. You will collaborate with prototype machine shops, electrochemical device experts, and other mechanical engineers focused on chemical plant equipment.
Location: San Francisco Bay Area (Remote work not specified). Travel is less than 10%.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, prototype, and commission electrochemical cells at lab, pilot, and production scale.
- Design, build, and test custom balance-of-plant equipment.
- Develop mechanical component and assembly cost models.
- Define requirements for integrating electrochemical systems into battery recycling plants.
- Participate in verification and validation testing.
- Collaborate with R&D electrochemical engineers and plant design teams.
- Execute mechanical FEA and CFD simulations.
- Produce CAD models, engineering drawings, and bills of materials.
Qualifications
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Expertise in electrochemical cell or system design.
- Experience in prototype building and testing.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and engineering drawings with GD&T knowledge.
- Experience in mechanical FEA and CFD.
- Hands-on lab work; comfortable standing and operating equipment.
- Ability to work in office, machine shop, wet laboratory, chemical plant, and outdoor test sites with exposure to hazardous materials and electrical hazards.
- Travel less than 10%.
