Environmental Health Officer

Byrne-Mech Ltd is seeking an experienced Environmental, Health, Safety & Compliance Officer to manage and continually improve environmental, health, safety and regulatory compliance across our busy sheet-metal manufacturing facility in Athenry.

A key focus of this position will be environmental management, including trade effluent, water quality, waste, emissions, environmental monitoring and liaison with relevant regulatory authorities and external consultants.

The successful candidate will have a practical, hands-on approach and will work closely with management, supervisors and employees.

Key ResponsibilitiesEnvironmental Management

• Manage the company’s environmental compliance obligations, including applicable permits, licences, consents and reporting requirements.
• Liaise with the Environmental Protection Agency, Uisce Éireann, local authorities, environmental consultants and other relevant bodies.
• Manage trade-effluent requirements, including sampling, testing, monitoring, record-keeping and reporting.
• Coordinate environmental monitoring relating to effluent, emissions, water usage, energy, waste, noise and chemical storage.
• Ensure compliance with applicable discharge limits, permits, licences and consent conditions.
• Oversee the segregation, storage and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
• Maintain waste documentation and records relating to authorised waste contractors and collections.
• Ensure chemicals, oils, paints and other controlled materials are stored, handled and disposed of appropriately.
• Investigate environmental incidents, spills, exceedances and complaints and ensure corrective actions are completed.
• Identify opportunities to reduce waste, water and energy consumption and the company’s overall environmental impact.

Health & Safety

• Provide guidance to management and employees on health and safety legislation and best practice.
• Develop, implement and review policies, procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
• Carry out regular workplace inspections, internal audits and safety observations.
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Coordinate employee inductions, manual-handling training, toolbox talks and other safety training.
• Maintain the company Safety Statement and associated EHS documentation.
• Monitor contractor, visitor, machinery and work-process compliance.
• Liaise with the Health and Safety Authority, occupational-health providers, insurers and external consultants where required.

Regulatory Compliance

• Coordinate the company’s ongoing Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) compliance activities.
• Maintain relevant supplier information, import records and supporting documentation.
• Manage supplier environmental and material-compliance activities through the company’s Assent compliance platform.
• Coordinate supplier declarations relating to REACH, RoHS, PFAS, conflict minerals and other applicable requirements.
• Assist with customer compliance questionnaires, declarations and audits.
• Work with purchasing, engineering, accounts and quality personnel to maintain accurate compliance records.
• Support and maintain the EHS elements of the company’s Integrated Management System.

Qualifications and Experience

• A recognised third-level qualification in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline.
• Relevant experience in an environmental, EHS, manufacturing, engineering or industrial role.
• Knowledge of Irish environmental and health and safety legislation.
• Experience or knowledge relating to environmental monitoring, waste management, water quality, effluent, emissions or regulatory reporting.
• Practical experience in risk assessment, incident investigation, auditing or compliance management.
• Strong organisational, communication, report-writing and record-keeping skills.
• Good IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
• The initiative and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Desirable

• Experience in a manufacturing, engineering, fabrication or similar industrial environment.
• Experience with trade-effluent monitoring, environmental sampling or waste compliance.
• Knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management-system requirements.
• Experience with CBAM, Assent or supplier material-compliance requirements.
• Manual Handling Instructor or First Aid Responder qualification.
