About the Role

Brineworks is developing ultra low-cost direct air capture (DAC) for carbon removal and utilisation. We are a climate tech start-up headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with an

international team of 15 with expertise spanning chemistry, engineering, policy, business, and strategy.

We are seeking a motivated process engineer intern to join our team. This is a hands-on role that bridges design engineering and pilot plant operations. You will contribute to the piping and instrumentation design of a DAC facility while also supporting data processing and day-to-day operation of our DAC pilot plant. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience across the full lifecycle of climate technology—from concept design through real-world testing.

Key Responsibilities

Piping & Instrumentation Design (DAC Plant)

  • Assist in developing and reviewing Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for the DAC plant
  • Support pipe sizing, material selection, and routing studies in coordination with senior engineers
  • Help define instrument specifications (sensors, transmitters, control valves) and prepare instrument data sheets
  • Contribute to equipment lists, line lists, and valve schedules
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and constructability assessments
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, and controls teams to ensure design consistency

Pilot Plant Operations & Data Processing

  • Assist with the daily operation of the DAC pilot plant, including startup, shutdown, and monitoring procedures
  • Collect, clean, and organize operational data from the pilot plant’s sensor and control systems
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, automated scripts, or databases for data visualization and trend analysis
  • Perform data quality checks and flag anomalies for engineering review
  • Support test campaign planning, execution, and post-test analysis
  • Document operating procedures, lessons learned, and performance results

Qualifications - Required

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Foundational knowledge of process engineering principles (mass/energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics)
  • Familiarity with P&ID symbology and reading engineering drawings
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or ANY similar tools for data analysis
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a team environment
  • Interest in climate technology, carbon capture, or clean energy

What You’ll Gain

  • Real-world experience in both design engineering and plant operations within the DAC industry
  • Mentorship from experienced process, piping, and controls engineers
  • Exposure to the full project lifecycle—from P&ID development to pilot plant testing
  • Skills in data engineering, process design, and operational troubleshooting
  • The opportunity to contribute meaningfully to climate change mitigation
  • Free lunch, plus unlimited snacks and drinks in the office
  • Paid internship
