Energy Engineer
(ASHRAE Level 1–2 Audits & Building Decarbonization Studies)
Overview
Blue Strike is seeking an Energy Engineer to support building-level energy audits and decarbonization studies for municipal, university, and institutional facilities. This role focuses on evaluating HVAC, lighting, and building systems and developing actionable Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) aligned with ASHRAE Level 1 and 2 audit standards.

The Energy and Climate Team works with clients to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and develop a variety of energy strategies. Our expertise includes energy efficiency, decarbonization strategies, distributed energy resources, financial and economic due diligence for municipal projects, regulatory consulting, and creating policies for upstream and downstream emission reductions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform ASHRAE Level 1 & 2 energy audits (walkthroughs, equipment inventories, data analysis)
- Identify and quantify Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs)
- Analyze HVAC, lighting, domestic hot water, and controls systems
- Develop building electrification and decarbonization retrofit concepts
- Conduct lifecycle cost analysis (LCCA) and savings estimates
- Prepare technical audit reports and client-ready deliverables
- Support coordination with mechanical and electrical engineering staff
Position
- Remote-friendly freelance contract
- Project-based scopes (2–12 weeks typical)

Required Skills & Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years experience in building energy analysis or audits
- Knowledge of ASHRAE audit procedures and standards
- Strong HVAC and building systems fundamentals
- Experience with utility bill analysis and load calculations
Preferred Tools
- Excel / Google Sheets
- EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, eQuest, IESVE (preferred but not required)
- Portfolio Manager
- RETScreen or similar
