The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Compliance Manager to join our team.
The Environmental Compliance Manager will be responsible for ensuring environmental regulatory compliance across four food waste Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities in the South West of England. The role provides technical leadership and governance to maintain compliance with Environmental Permits, PAS 110 standards, Animal By-Product Regulations (ABPR), and wider UK environmental legislation while supporting operational excellence and sustainable business performance. The position acts as the primary liaison with regulatory authorities and leads compliance audits, environmental reporting, incident management, and environmental management systems
Duties
Your tasks will include, but not limited to the following:
Regulatory Compliance & Permitting
- Act as the primary contact for the Environment Agency and other regulatory bodies.
- Maintain compliance with all Environmental Permits, licences, exemptions, and consent conditions.
- Monitor legislative changes and implement required site compliance measures.
- Support sites during regulatory inspections and audits.
Environmental Monitoring & Reporting
- Manage statutory environmental reporting requirements and submissions.
- Oversee emissions monitoring, waste tracking, waste transfer documentation, and environmental performance reporting.
- Ensure accurate environmental records are maintained and readily accessible for inspection.
- Analyse compliance data and identify trends requiring action.
Digestate Quality & PAS 110 Compliance
- Ensure digestate products consistently meet PAS 110 standards and associated quality protocols.
- Manage compliance with Animal By-Product Regulations (ABPR).
- Coordinate testing programmes and maintain certification requirements.
- Work closely with operational teams to resolve process issues impacting product quality.
Environmental Audits
- Develop and implement a structured environmental audit programme covering all four facilities.
- Conduct compliance inspections and identify risks, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
- Track corrective and preventative actions to closure.
- Provide compliance performance reports to senior management.
Odour & Emissions Management
- Lead implementation and review of Odour Management Plans.
- Monitor environmental impacts relating to feedstock handling, storage, and processing.
- Investigate complaints and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
- Ensure biofilters and other control measures are operating effectively.
Incident Investigation & Risk Management
- Lead investigations into environmental incidents and near misses.
- Conduct root cause analysis and develop corrective action plans.
- Prepare reports for regulators and senior management where required.
- Support emergency response activities and environmental risk assessments.
Management Systems
- Maintain and improve Environmental Management Systems and Quality Management Systems.
- Support ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 compliance initiatives.
- Drive continuous improvement projects across all operational sites.
- Develop environmental procedures, policies, and training materials.
Stakeholder & Community Engagement
- Develop positive relationships with regulators, landowners, contractors, and local communities.
- Respond professionally to environmental enquiries and complaints.
- Promote a strong environmental culture across all sites.
Requirements
Essential:
- Significant experience in environmental compliance within waste management, anaerobic digestion, biogas, recycling, or a related regulated industry.
- Strong knowledge of Environmental Permitting Regulations, Duty of Care requirements, and waste legislation.
- Experience conducting environmental audits and managing corrective action programmes.
- Excellent technical report writing and regulatory communication skills.
- Strong analytical and data management capabilities.
- Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel regularly between sites.
Desirable:
- WAMITAB / CoTC qualification or experience operating under a Competence Management System.
- Experience with Anaerobic Digestion operations.
- Knowledge of PAS 110, ABPR, BCS and ADRF requirements.
- Understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 management systems.
This is a full time position, Monday-Friday 40 hours per week, offering a salary of £50,000 plus benefits.
