Project Engineer

Leading UK Independent Power Producer (IPP)

Grid-scale battery energy storage (BESS), long-duration storage

London office, hybrid: 2–3 days a week in the office, plus site visits across the UK

Up to £75,000, pension, 15% bonus and healthcare

About the company

Our client is a leading Independent Power Producer developing, building and operating grid-scale battery storage across the UK. It has a large pipeline of long-duration BESS projects moving from development into construction.

The UK team is small, experienced and growing quickly. That means real ownership from day one, direct exposure to senior leadership, and the chance to shape how projects are engineered and delivered as the business continues to grow.

The role

As Project Engineer you will provide the technical backbone for a long duration grid-scale BESS project, from late-stage development through construction, energisation and handover to the O&M contractor. You will work closely with the Engineering Manager and the Project Delivery Director, acting as the client-side engineering lead with designers, EPC contractors, equipment suppliers and NESO, NG and specialist consultants.

This is a hands-on role for an electrical or mechanical engineer who has delivered large infrastructure projects and wants broader responsibility in a fast-growing part of the energy transition.

Key responsibilities

Engineering and design

  • Review and manage design packages from EPC contractors and consultants: single-line diagrams, layouts, civil and structural, earthing, protection and control, cable sizing and HVAC/fire suppression for battery enclosures.
  • Check designs against Grid Code, requirements, relevant British and IEC standards and the your technical specifications.
  • Support technical due diligence on new projects as they move from development into construction.

Procurement and contractor interface

  • Help prepare technical specifications and tender packages for BESS equipment (battery systems, PCS/inverters, transformers, switchgear) and balance-of-plant works.
  • Evaluate technical bids and support contract negotiations.
  • Act as a key technical point of contact for EPC contractors, OEMs and suppliers.

Construction and commissioning

  • Monitor construction progress and quality on site, attending regular site visits across the UK.
  • Witness factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).
  • Support grid connection works, substation builds and energisation with the national grid.
  • Oversee commissioning, performance testing and handover to the asset management team.

Project controls and compliance

  • Track and resolve technical risks, issues, RFIs and change requests.
  • Support programme, cost and interface management with the Project Delivery Director.
  • Ensure CDM 2015 duties and health and safety standards are met throughout delivery.
  • Maintain technical documentation, O&M manuals and as-built records.

Continuous improvement

  • Capture lessons learned and help build standard designs, specifications and processes as the portfolio grows.

About you

Essential

  • Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Typically 3+ years’ experience on large infrastructure projects, such as BESS, substations, solar, wind, grid connections, transmission/distribution or other major power and utility works.
  • Hands-on experience across design review, construction and commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of HV/MV electrical systems and UK grid connection processes.
  • Confident managing contractors and suppliers, with strong written and verbal communication.
  • Organised, proactive and comfortable in a small, fast-moving team.
  • Right to work in the UK and a full UK driving licence for site visits.

Desirable

  • Direct experience on grid-scale BESS projects, including battery systems, PCS and fire safety.
  • Owner’s engineer, developer or IPP experience, or EPC experience on the contractor side.
  • Familiarity with G99, Grid Code, the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations (ESQCR) and NFPA 855 or equivalent BESS fire standards.
  • Progress towards, or holding, Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with the IET or IMechE.
  • SMSTS, SSSTS or CSCS card.

What’s on offer

  • Hybrid working: 2–3 days a week in the London office.
  • A key role in a small, growing team, with genuine influence over how projects are delivered.
  • Exposure to a large portfolio of long-duration storage projects, from development through to operation.
  • Support with professional development and chartership.
