JOB DESCRIPTION


Duties:


Distribution Asset Planning is offering a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Distribution System Specialist Planner to join the Metro Distribution Asset Planning team based at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. This position will lead the distribution system planning and studies in the Metro and Coastal regions to manage system assets for growth, reliability, and system performance.


The key accountabilities for the Distribution System Specialist Planner are:


* Provides power system planning expertise and leadership in developing short- and long-term Distribution system plans to optimize Distribution system performance, considering load growth and customer requirements, operational needs, corporate objectives, and long-term strategic goals.

* Leads in conducting technical and economic planning studies to identify Distribution system requirements to supply load reliably and efficiently.

* Proactively undertakes problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of original solutions to complex or emerging power system technical and business issues.

* Provides project leadership to meet broad goals or objectives, schedules and budgets; assigns work and gives instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers and technical support staff.

* Reviews work of other technical staff, including consultants and contractors, to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.

* Leads the development and implementation of business objectives and performance measurements.

* Leads, provides expert input, and represents Distribution Asset Planning in the public consultation and regulatory process.

* Develops briefings notes on complex technical and business issues to inform senior management and develops responses to regulatory-related matters.

* Fosters collaboration and builds influential relationships within planning teams and across BC Hydro.

* Leads, develops, maintains and strengthens relations with external communities, municipalities, consultants, technical societies and associations, industry interest groups, suppliers and other utilities.


Qualifications:


* A recognized Electrical Engineering degree and registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

* A minimum of 10 years of progressive and comprehensive engineering experience, with a primary focus on power system planning and operations (generation, transmission, distribution).

* Knowledge of electric utility and power system modelling concepts.

* Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to conduct negotiations, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences, write technical papers and reports, and liaise with peers and experts in BC Hydro and externally.

* Excellent leadership, organizational, team building and project management skills, including cost control and project administration.

* Proven ability to think independently, strategically, and laterally, to highlight improvement opportunities, and drive change.

* Knowledge of smart grid is an asset, for example, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Distributed Energy Integration, electrical vehicle charging systems and non-wires alternatives.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION


* Travel to various areas of the province may be required to fully perform the duties of this position.

* A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Driver's License (Class 5) in good standing.

* Applicants who do not meet full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a position at a lower level.
