About the job:
The Hydrotechnical Engineering Team is a specialized and dedicated group of engineers within the larger Generation Stations Civil Engineering division at BC Hydro. We work closely with various engineering disciplines including structural and geotechnical teams, and with several other groups across the organization such as Dam Safety, Environment, Operations, Mechanical Design and Stations Maintenance groups. We focus on a wide variety of water resource, hydrology and hydraulics studies supporting Dam Safety, new capital projects and rehabilitation of existing assets. We are a diverse team of approximately 14 professionals with varied backgrounds and experience ranging from EITs to Principal Engineers. In addition to our in-house work, several members of our team actively contribute to international technical committees and collaborate on research projects relating to 3D hydraulic modelling, hydraulic transient studies, penstock safety, landslide and wind generated reservoir wave modelling, and hydrologic uncertainty in extreme floods, including climate change. The successful candidate will join BC Hydro’s Hydrotechnical Engineering group, working alongside senior team members and mentoring junior staff, within multi-discipline project teams to provide Hydrotechnical expertise and support to on-going projects. As a registered Professional Engineer, you would serve as the Professional of Record on assignments. The role may also include acting as Owner’s Engineer for projects conducted by external consultants.
What you’ll do
The technical assignments are broad and may involve:
* Open channel hydraulics including river channel/floodplain hydraulic modelling, dam breach assessments, and culvert assessments;
* Hydrologic/watershed modelling including flood frequency analysis, flood hazard assessment and extreme flood estimation;
* Spillway and other hydraulic structure design, modification and/or modelling;
* Modelling and analyses of closed conduit hydraulics, including turbine operation, transient analyses, and rating curve development;
* Water resources system modelling and optimization, including reservoir operations;
* Engineering related to fish passage and habitat enhancement works; and,
* Hydrologic and geospatial data collection and analyses.
* Responsibilities will include workplan scoping and budgeting, analysis and modelling, memoranda and report preparation, and actively collaborating within the Hydrotechnical team and with other project teams.
What you bring
Bachelor or advanced degree in Civil Engineering, with emphasis on hydrotechnical or water resources engineering (hydrology and/or hydraulics).
* A minimum of eight (8) years of proven professional work experience in an engineering or research setting in the hydraulics and/or hydrology sector.
* Registration, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
* Strong technical expertise in hydraulic and/or hydrologic analyses, as shown by relevant work experience.
* Effective written and oral communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
* A self-starter, with ability to manage several projects/tasks concurrently and mentor junior staff.
* Strong technical and report writing skills.
* Experience with any of the software listed below would be an asset:
- Hydraulic modelling: HEC-RAS 1D/2D, MIKE+, River2D, TELEMAC-2D, FLOW-3D, WHAMO, HAMMER, SWAN,
DualSPHysics
- Hydrologic/watershed modelling: Raven, HEC-HMS, or similar hydrologic modelling software
- Linear programming languages and optimization solvers (e.g. AMPL, CPLEX)
- ArcGIS, QGIS, Blue Kenue or other software used for geospatial data analysis
- General coding or programming languages including Python, R, or Matlab
