JOB DESCRIPTION


Duties:


The Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering Division is responsible for the design, implementation, and operation of BC Hydro’s protection and control systems and networks. These systems ensure the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of the electrical grid while meeting the needs of planners, regulators, customers, and stakeholders.


As a Specialist Commissioning Engineer, you will play a key role in verifying and approving P&C systems before they are placed into service. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure assets are properly installed, tested, and commissioned.


This role is ideal for someone who enjoys troubleshooting, problem-solving, and working in a dynamic environment. While based in Burnaby, the position includes travel to sites across British Columbia and occasional travel within North America.


Key responsibilities:

* Serve as a subject matter expert in P&C commissioning for projects

* Act as Professional of Record (PoR) for commissioning results * Lead testing and commissioning of complex P&C systems and equipment

* Develop and review commissioning and staging plans in coordination with engineering teams and the Control Center * Review and approve commissioning deliverables and test results

* Provide oversight and technical guidance for commissioning activities

* Support field commissioning teams and resolve technical issues during construction and commissioning * Participate in constructability reviews and project planning

* Establish and maintain commissioning standards, procedures, and best practices

* Mentor and provide technical leadership to team members Additional accountabilities:

* Validate field test results and provide final approval as PoR

* Collaborate with Field Operations, Quality Management, and project teams to ensure timely issue resolution

* Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables in accordance with EGBC and BC Hydro standards

* Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, workflows, and quality practices

* Identify risks and develop practical, value-driven engineering solutions

* Lead meetings, deliver presentations, and represent the team in technical forums

* Support departmental objectives and performance goals


Qualifications:


* Bachelor’s (or higher) degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.

* Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia

* Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in transmission systems, industrial control systems, cybersecurity, or systems engineering

* At least 4 years of experience leading and coordinating P&C commissioning on medium to large projects

* Strong understanding of transmission system operations and multidisciplinary project impacts

* Experience in P&C design, settings, or systems engineering is considered an asset

* Strong commissioning experience with P&C systems is highly desirable

* Excellent leadership, communication, and technical writing skills

* Solid understanding of project management principles

* Familiarity with BC Hydro design practices and project delivery processes is an asset
