Construction Project Manager
Location: Decatur, IL
Employment Type: 8+ month contact with potential to roll into another project
Pay Range: $60-85 hr DOE

Our climate tech company is in search of a Construction Project manager who has experience leading greenfield projects. They need someone who has led the entire construction execution of a plant/project from mobilization through commissioning — not someone who only managed one functional scope such as maintenance, turnaround support, piping, or utilities. This is an onsite role in Decatur, IL.
Job Summary
The Construction Project Manager is responsible for overall field execution of a complex industrial construction project, including safety, schedule, cost, quality, and contractor management. This role leads day-to-day site activities and ensures alignment between engineering design, procurement delivery, and construction execution. This position requires a strong field presence, deep understanding of industrial construction practices, and the ability to coordinate across multiple disciplines in a fast-paced, first-of-a-kind (FOAK) environment. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience managing large-scale industrial or process plant projects and thrives in an innovative, evolving project setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all on-site construction activities, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality execution
- Manage EPC and subcontractor performance, including scope, schedule, cost, and quality adherence
- Drive site safety culture and ensure compliance with all regulatory and company safety standards
- Coordinate closely with Engineering, Procurement, and Project Controls to align design, materials, and construction sequencing
- Oversee construction planning, work packaging, and execution strategy / 2-week look ahead schedules in collaboration with the Planner/Scheduler/Set daily work plans for all sub-contractors
- Monitor and manage project schedule, identifying risks and implementing recovery / work around plans as needed
- Ensure timely availability of materials, equipment, and labor to support construction progress
- Lead daily/weekly site meetings, including coordination, progress tracking, and issue resolution
- Manage field changes, RFIs, and construction-related technical queries in coordination with engineering teams
- Inform engineering team of in-field constructability issues and work with team to develop and execute work arounds
- Ensure P&IDs, IFC blueprints and computer models match the constructed systems
- Track construction progress, installed quantities, and productivity against plan
- Work closely with the finance teams to manage / update construction spend vs budgets.
- Pre-inspect all field work to ensure compliance with stated building codes to ensure all required city building inspections pass
- Maintain a respectful and professional relationship with all project stakeholders
- Ensure quality control processes are implemented and maintained across all construction activities
- Support commissioning and startup activities, ensuring smooth transition from construction to operations
- Prepare punch list items and ensure completion prior to handover to commissioning / operations teams.
- Maintain clear communication with project leadership on status, risks, and mitigation plans
- Drive continuous improvement in construction execution, productivity, and field coordination
- Capture Lessons Learned and provide feedback to Engineering / project teams.
Requirements & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
- 10+ years of experience in construction management within oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical, power, or heavy industrial environments
- Proven experience managing large-scale industrial or process plant construction projects
- Strong knowledge of construction sequencing, field execution, and contractor management
- Fluency reading industrial P&IDs, IFC blueprints and 3D models
- Strong knowledge of IBC, NEC, ASME B31.3 and ASCE codes and industry standards
- Familiarity with industrial valves, flow meters, sensors and other measurement equipment
- Experience working within EPC ,EPCC and T&M project delivery models
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple contractors and complex site logistics
- Familiarity with project controls, scheduling, and cost management principles
- Experience working in environments with significant safety and regulatory requirements
- Strong leadership, communication, and coordination skills
- Ability to make decisions in a fast-paced, evolving project environment
- Proficiency with construction management tools, reporting systems, and standard software (Excel, project platforms)
- Willingness to travel and be site-based in Central Illinois and other future site locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with carbon capture, energy transition, or clean technology projects
- Background in first-of-a-kind (FOAK) or pilot-scale deployments
- Experience in brownfield or operating facility environments
- Prior involvement in commissioning and startup phases
- Familiarity with modular construction or advanced manufacturing approaches
- OSHA 30 or equivalent safety certification
