Position Summary:
To assist the Summer Camp Head Counselors safely implement Sharon Audubon Center’s Summer Nature Programs for children in K-6th grade. Each Summer Camp Assistant Counselor will be needed approximately 10 weeks over the course of the summer Monday through Friday, for 7-8 hours per day.
Essential Functions:
  • Assisting the Summer Camp Counselors with setting up and cleaning up each day’s activities, planning and executing each weeklong camp session for their small team group of campers, including teaching discovery hikes, pond explorations, live animal programs, nature crafts and games, and other activities relating to summer camp.
  • Assist with maintaining the safety of all campers during their time at Audubon Camp.
  • Participate in the activities with the children as needed and may be asked to prepare crafts such as running the photocopier or computer, cutting out projects, etc.
  • Special attention is to be taken for following all Audubon, OEC and CDC guidelines for COVID-19 safety. At the time of this posting, requirements include mandating proper distancing between campers and staff, mask-wearing, not sharing materials, keeping groups separated, cleaning and disinfecting, etc. Counselors must keep good communication with the Camp Director and/or Director of First Aid to report bathroom usage (for cleaning purposes,) possible sick campers, etc. Deep cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, materials, tables and chairs and other items used during the day will be expected at the end of each camp day. Unless current conditions change, counselors will be required to wear a mask at all times while inside the buildings, and while on the Audubon grounds when proper distancing is not feasible. Camp will be primarily outdoors, with the exception of thunderstorms or other potentially dangerous hazards. All camp staff may be required to complete and pass a COVID-19 health questionnaire, as well as other related COVID-19 requirements, such as a temperature check, each day before the start of camp, and may be asked to receive a COVID -19 test a few times throughout the summer. Counselors showing/feeling any signs of COVID-19, will be asked to be tested for COVID-19 and remain home until results are received. If there are any campers and/or counselors who become ill with COVID-19 symptoms during camp, they will be required to be tested and their small group cohort will need to quarantine for the recommended amount of time or take other precautions recommended by public health authorities. Summer camp staff will work as needed based on any restrictions required as a result of COVID-19 requirements.
  • Assist the Head Counselors during summer camp and works under the guidance of the Education Program Manager/Summer Camp Director, however, the entire full time staff is available to summer staff for special interest sessions, guidance and assistance. Counselors will be working closely with each other.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with summer campers and their parents and/or guardians, as well as volunteers.
  • Use of basic office equipment such as a photocopier, fax machine, telephones, digital camera and simple outdoor recreational equipment, such as pond nets, compasses, etc.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Must work well with children and adults, show respect for all others, nature and the outdoors.
  • Enthusiastic about working, even in unfavorable weather conditions, pleasant, reliable and able to carry out simple assigned tasks.
  • Must have a ride to and from the Audubon Center each day for work.
  • Environmental Education experience and local natural history knowledge is a plus.
  • Must be aware of COVID-19 guidelines and SAC safety procedures and the ability to enforce those safety precautions.
  • Must have the ability to walk all major trails of the Sharon Audubon Center and on uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to run, sit, stand, grasp, lift, move, walk, push, reach, climb and pull for short and extended periods of time.
  • Able to work outdoors in the heat of summer, while wearing a mask.
  • Must be willing to have temperature checks performed each day and receive COVID-19 testing, possibly several times throughout the summer, if requested.
  • Must be 16 years or above to work at this location.
