Climate Communications Director / Public Affairs Director
The Climate Communications Director / Public Affairs Director is responsible for shaping and leading the organization’s external and internal communication strategy related to climate action, sustainability, and public policy engagement. The role focuses on building trust, strengthening reputation, and effectively communicating environmental and ESG commitments to stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include developing communication strategies that articulate the organization’s climate goals, sustainability initiatives, and public policy positions. The role involves managing media relations, press communications, and public messaging related to climate and environmental topics.
The director works closely with executive leadership, sustainability teams, legal, and government affairs to ensure alignment on messaging and policy engagement. They are responsible for engaging with regulators, policymakers, NGOs, industry groups, and the media to support advocacy and reputation management.
In addition, the role includes overseeing crisis communication related to environmental or reputational risks, as well as ensuring transparency in sustainability reporting and public disclosures. The Climate Communications Director / Public Affairs Director plays a key role in building credibility and influence in climate-related discussions.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Environmental Studies, Journalism, or a related field
- 8–15+ years of experience in public affairs, corporate communications, government relations, or sustainability communications roles
- Strong understanding of climate policy, ESG issues, and sustainability frameworks
- Proven experience managing media relations and public messaging strategies
- Excellent writing, storytelling, and executive communication skills
- Experience engaging with government bodies, regulators, NGOs, and industry stakeholders
- Strong crisis communication and reputation management skills
- Ability to translate complex climate and policy topics into clear messaging
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills at senior levels
- Experience in corporate, nonprofit, or policy environments is an advantage
- Strong strategic thinking and analytical abilities
- Ability to manage sensitive and high-profile communications situations
