Arup has made sustainability and the transition to net zero a priority in its operations and project work . Our Energy team is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and associated technical specialists who contribute to the firm's work on modelling, planning and design for urban energy and energy infrastructure projects that contribute to decarbonisation and transition pathways.

The Opportunity

On this 6-12 week Summer Internship you'll work alongside skilled professionals and be supported to work on real world projects from day one. We encourage our interns to demonstrate drive and motivation, to seek to improve existing ways of working, to show a willingness to learn about our business, and to have a desire to effectively meet our clients' goals through the delivery of our projects.

Our aim is to welcome many students back into our other programmes be that another internship or potential graduate position. This placement is the stepping-stone to your future.

Our Areas Of Business Include

  • Research and modelling of energy use, emissions, and related data to inform climate change and sustainability strategies for cities, institutions and the private sector.
  • Cost benefit analysis and economic analysis of climate change impacts and interventions.
  • Modelling and design of distributed energy systems such as district heating, power generation (including renewables), storage (both electrical and thermal) and microgrids.
  • Energy masterplanning, including techno-economic analysis, feasibility assessment of low carbon distributed energy systems.
  • Technical advice for investors and developers on low carbon energy investments including business cases, commercialisation, and procurement.
  • Delivery of engineering services to support clients from project concept through design, construction, and operations, particularly in area such as hydrogen solutions, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy (fixed and floating wind, wave and tidal), and other low carbon solutions that contribute to transition pathways.

Responsibilities

You will work on a variety of projects ranging from detailed research studies to strategic planning and policy advice for city governments and other organisations. Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Gathering, processing, and interpreting data from a variety of sources
  • Building and updating simulation and data analysis models
  • Co-ordinating with colleagues across disciplines and offices, including engineers, economists and other specialists
  • Liaising with clients, suppliers and contractors
  • Supporting senior colleagues in developing design solutions and evaluations, carrying out technical analysis using design software packages and preparing drawings and sketches
  • Supporting project managers on project management and administration
  • Report writing and input to presentations
  • Organising internal and external events
  • Supporting preparation of proposals for new project commissions
  • Delivery of engineering services to support clients from project concept through design, construction, and operations.

The diverse nature of our work means that you will be working for a variety of clients, on projects across a wide range of markets including organisations focused on low carbon and climate resilient development, energy infrastructure companies, financial institutions, banks and other investors, developers, local and national governments, and utilities, among others. Our work is grounded in rigorous analysis and informed by engineering, economic, policy and governance perspectives.

Is this role right for you?

We Are Looking For Candidates Who

  • Are working towards an undergraduate degree or higher in engineering, physics, maths, computer science or an allied numerate discipline with prediction of 2:1 or higher.
  • Have strong numerical and analysis skills including advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and/or a coding language
  • Have an enthusiasm for a career in the Energy industry, supported by knowledge from relevant modules in their studies
  • Have an awareness of neighbouring disciplines to support appreciation of the context in which problems exist and a creative approach to problem solving
  • Able to be flexible to the needs of the business and changes to projects
