Arup has made sustainability and the transition to net zero central to our mission, both in our operations and our project work. Our Urban Energy business leads the firm's work on city decarbonisation plans and programmes, whole systems energy modelling, energy masterplanning and heat network development.

The Opportunity

Urban Energy comprises a multi-disciplinary group of engineers, physicists, data scientists and environmental specialists. We operate as an integrated national team, with centres of practice in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

We integrate technical, commercial, planning and policy expertise to help clients make informed decisions about energy system design, energy infrastructure and technology investments, decarbonisation strategies and plans, policy design and implementation and energy purchasing. Digital underpins everything we do, with active adoption of automation, advanced data analytics and code-based tool and model development.

We work with central and local governments, developers, network operators and investors. Our areas of business include:

  • Modelling and design of distributed energy systems such as district heating, power generation (including renewables), storage (both electrical and thermal) and microgrids.
  • Energy masterplanning, including techno-economic analysis, feasibility assessment of low carbon distributed energy systems.
  • Research and modelling of energy use, emissions and related data to inform climate change and sustainability strategies for cities, institutions and the private sector.
  • Cost benefit analysis and economic analysis of climate change impacts and interventions.
  • Multi-disciplinary strategic planning, policy analysis and advisory for cities, drawing on robust evidence bases and tools.
  • Technical advice for investors and developers on low carbon energy investments including business case, commercialisation and procurement.
  • Delivery of engineering services to support clients from project concept through design, construction, and operations.

Responsibilities

You will work on a variety of projects ranging from detailed research studies to engineering design to strategic planning and policy advice. Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Gathering, processing, and interpreting data from a variety of sources
  • Building and updating simulation and data analysis models
  • Co-ordinating with colleagues across disciplines, including engineers, economists and other specialists
  • Engineering design of district heating systems and other distributed energy infrastructure.
  • Supporting project managers on project management and administration
  • Report writing and input to presentations
  • Organising internal and external events
  • Supporting preparation of proposals for new project commissions

The diverse nature of our work means that you will be working for a variety of clients, on projects across a wide range of markets including organisations focused on low carbon and climate resilient development, financial institutions, banks and other investors, developers, local governments, and utilities, among others.

Is this role right for you?

Preferred Qualifications, Attributes And Skills

  • A university degree or higher, in engineering, physics or in an allied numerate discipline with prediction of 2:1 or higher. Other degree qualifications will be considered where accompanied by sector-specific learning or experience
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills, including advanced skills in Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including communicating technical information to non-technical audiences
  • A commitment to a low carbon future

Experience of, or interest in, some of the following would be an advantage:

  • Knowledge of and interest in national and local energy generation, transmission and distribution systems infrastructure and their operations and legislation.
  • Experience using coding, modelling, simulation and/or analysis software packages. (eg. Python, R, Matlab, EnergyPRO, ArcGIS, DIgSILENT, ETAP, IES, NetSim, SPSS)
