What Is Global R&D
The ArcelorMittal Global R&D Hamilton research lab has a staff of ~90 people and a wide range of analytical and process simulation equipment. The Hamilton lab is part of a larger Global R&D organization with ~1500 researchers in several geographic locations across Europe and the Americas. The R&D lab provides technical leadership in process improvement and new product development that supports both the Dofasco plant and broader global applications.
Your Role
Your primary role will be providing technical support for the Primary Processing team including Steelmaking and Continuous Casting Process Research Group and the Energy and CO2 Research Group. The role will be a combination of sample preparation, laboratory work and activities in the plant. Documentation of results, analysis and interpretation of data will be important. You will be expected to contribute to large R&D projects as well as supporting the Dofasco plant with critical technical assistance.

Your Role
Your primary role will be providing technical support for the Primary Processing team including Steelmaking and Continuous Casting Process Research Group and the Energy and CO2 Research Group. The role will be a combination of sample preparation, laboratory work and activities in the plant. Documentation of results, analysis and interpretation of data will be important. You will be expected to contribute to large R&D projects as well as supporting the Dofasco plant with critical technical assistance.
Main tasks
- Support Global R&D projects, and Technical Assistance projects related to two ArcelorMittal Dofasco casters attached to the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking streams.
- Support industrial trials at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s casters, as and when required.
- Support biocarbon trials in ironmaking/steelmaking and by-product material evaluation through collection of samples in the plant, sample preparation, laboratory evaluation and developing new evaluation techniques.
- Operate the state-of-the-art Micro X-Ray Fluorescence (MXRF) device to obtain digital chemistry data and perform segregation analysis on steel specimens using MATLAB & Python programs.
- Operate the world’s first industrial prototype XRF device to obtain digitalized chemistry data directly from advanced high strength steel (AHSS) slabs produced at ArcelorMittal Dofasco.
- Operate industrial equipment, such as forklift (driver’s license preferred), 5-ton overhead crane, bandsaw cutter, waterjet cutter, CNC milling machine, heat treatment furnace, 3D printer and advanced state-of-the-art devices (after safety and operational training) to prepare and process steel slab samples.
- Perform R&D analytical techniques, such as metallography, statistical analysis using MINITAB, Python, or Excel; process and XRF data analysis using plant databases, thermogravimetric analysis.
- Sampling, sample preparation, testing, and shipping of raw material and by-product samples.
- Wear mandatory industrial personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hat, fire-protected clothing, lab-coat, safety glasses, gloves etc. for performing R&D work.
- Prepare MS Word reports and PowerPoint presentations to communicate analysis, results and recommendations within R&D and Steelmaking business units.
- Support Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) events at R&D.
- College Diploma or University Degree in a science or technology field is required.
- Prior work experience is not required, but considered an asset.
- Able to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Verbal, presentation, and written communication skills for effect deployment of R&D across a range of groups.
- Strong facilitation skills.
- Ability to multi-task with strong time management skills.
- Knowledge in statistical analysis techniques and statistical software tools (R, Excel etc.) and working knowledge of Python programming is considered an asset.
- Office, plant and labratory environment.
- This position is 100% onsite.
- Occasional outside processors and customer manufacturing facilities.
- Infrequent travel as required.

The salary range for this position is $63,000 - $87,000. Starting salary and job title will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and work experience.
