Role description:
We are seeking a Design Manager to lead and manage the design delivery of complex rail and transit projects from concept through construction. This role will coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, high-quality solutions, serve as the main contact for clients and stakeholders on design matters, and oversee design schedules, budgets, and resources to meet project milestones. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards, supporting proposals and technical reviews, maintaining design quality assurance, and mentoring junior engineers to foster team development and knowledge sharing.
This role sits in our Mobility Global Business Area (GBA). We partner with our clients across the globe to design thriving and connected cities and communities that enable opportunity for all and keep the world moving. Climate change, urbanization and digitization trends are requiring today’s mobility projects and systems to address an evolving set of demands from the world’s growing population. Role accountabilities:
The successful candidate will lead and manage the design delivery of complex rail and transit projects, overseeing all phases from initial concept through detailed design and construction. This role requires strong project management skills and technical expertise to ensure that each stage of the design process meets project objectives and client expectations.
You will be responsible for coordinating across multiple disciplines, including civil, structural, electrical, systems, and architectural teams. By fostering collaboration among these groups, you will ensure that design solutions are fully integrated, efficient, and of the highest quality.
As the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, and internal teams on design-related matters, you will facilitate clear communication and maintain strong relationships. Your ability to address concerns, provide guidance, and drive project progress will be essential to successful project delivery.
The role includes overseeing design schedules, budgets, and resource planning to ensure that all project milestones are met. You will proactively manage resources and timelines to keep projects on track and within budgetary constraints.
Ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements is a key responsibility. Your thorough understanding of industry standards will help maintain the integrity and safety of all design outputs.
Additionally, you will support proposal development, lead technical reviews, and manage design quality assurance processes. Your contributions will help secure new opportunities and uphold the organization’s reputation for technical excellence.
Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team development and knowledge sharing is also an important aspect of this position. By fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, you will help build a strong and capable team that continuously improves its skills and expertise.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $178,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.

Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum 12 years of experience in rail and transit infrastructure design, preferably within Canada.
- Proven track record managing design teams on large-scale transit projects (e.g., LRT, subway).
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; Master’s degree is an asset.
- P.Eng. license in Ontario is preferred; candidates must be eligible to obtain licensure.
- Strong understanding of Canadian transit standards, procurement models (e.g., P3), and stakeholder environments.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
