Overview
We are seeking a Senior Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Scientist to join our Technology Strategy & Planning Department (TS&PD).
TS&PD provides high-impact leadership and support across the technology life-cycle, from strategy setting to value realization and sustainable growth, enabling data-informed technology decisions. This includes the use of LCA science to inform and guide technology developments & deployments.
Your primary role will be developing detailed LCA models, conducting climate change impact assessments of technology solutions, and drawing critical insights to inform decision making. This involves conducting due diligences as input into technology development cycles and to inform the company’s technology strategy, benchmarking of in-house technologies against existing solutions and/or best available alternatives; and analyzing the implications of LCA-based regulations on emerging low-carbon technologies. This will be achieved through in-house research and analysis, in collaboration with external LCA partners, and jointly with research entities globally, including top-tier universities, research laboratories, and think-tanks.
Key Responsibilities
As the successful candidate you will be required to perform the following:
- Develop comprehensive LCA models for low-carbon energy, chemicals, and/or materials.
- Conduct prospective LCA to assess the CO2 reduction potential and trade-off with the deployment of advanced technologies across multiple industries, including O&G, power generation, steel & cement, transportation, and data centers.
- Utilize state-of-the-art modeling techniques, tools and simulation software to support CO2-impact assessments of technology solutions independently or as part of a broader techno-economic assessment.
- Develop new methodologies and/or adapt emerging techniques from the literature into own assessment methods in order to advance the frontiers of LCA thinking within the Company.
- Maintain good understanding of LCA methodologies adopted in key regulations and standards worldwide.
- Lead collaborative research with universities and research institutions on various technology pathways.
- Publish peer-reviewed articles in high-impact scientific journals.
- Maintain and expand working knowledge of applicable software for programming (Matlab, Python, VB Excel, R), data analysis, and visualization (Power BI, Tableau).
Minimum Requirements
- You will hold a PhD degree in Science, Engineering, Physics or Mathematics discipline from a recognized and approved program. A master’s degree with proven LCA expertise will also be considered.
- You will have 7 years’ experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), including at least 5 years in the evaluation of advanced technologies relevant to the energy industry (i.e., oil, gas, chemicals, materials, renewables, energy storage, hydrogen & derivatives, and CCUS).
- You must be able to demonstrate proven track records in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Energy/Material Flow Analysis.
- You will have expertise in one or more Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools (e.g., GREET, GaBi, openLCA, SimaPro, etc.)
- You must be able to demonstrate knowledge of techno-economic assessment techniques for evaluating prospective technologies.
- It is also necessary to have general knowledge of key environmental policy regulations that could affect the choice of LCA methodologies.
- You must be comfortable working independently and as part of a project team.
- You will have the capability to work effectively in a multicultural environment across different divisions and time zones.
- You will be able to demonstrate effective communication skills in oral and written forms, and at technical and executive levels.
- You are self-motivated, adaptable, and have a learning mindset.
