Job Description
The Senior Systems Engineer is a highly skilled technical leader who lives and breathes digital infrastructure, networking, security, automation, and advanced problem-solving. This role is a cornerstone of our technical operations, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining resilient end-to-end systems across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. The Senior Systems Engineer is equally comfortable architecting new solutions, diving into complex troubleshooting, and ensuring our infrastructure is secure, scalable, and future-ready.
Beyond technical expertise, this position plays a pivotal role in mentoring and guiding junior team members, setting operational standards, and driving continuous improvement in how we deliver technology services. The ideal candidate blends hands-on technical mastery with strategic foresight, anticipating challenges, identifying opportunities for innovation, and executing solutions that align with business goals.

Qualifications
Primary Responsibilities
- Systems Architecture & Administration
- Design, deploy, and maintain scalable, heterogenous IT infrastructure across on-prem, distant remote-site, and cloud environments
- Build and manage physical and virtual servers, virtualization platforms (VMware, XCP-ng), and storage systems
- Administer Microsoft-based systems (Active Directory, Group Policy, etc.)
- Networking
- Configure and manage switches, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless infrastructure
- Maintain network security, performance, and reliability across multiple sites
- Troubleshoot complex networking issues at L2/L3 levels
- Cloud & Automation
- Support and optimize hybrid cloud environments (esp. Azure)
- Develop scripts and automation for deployment, monitoring, and incident response
- Security & Compliance
- Implement and manage endpoint protection, patching, and vulnerability management
- Participate in cybersecurity initiatives, risk assessments, and incident response
- Maintain compliance with company and regulatory standards (esp. NERC CIP)
- Support & Mentorship
- Serve as escalation point for IT/OT/SCADA support staff
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to knowledge sharing/documentation
- Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple departments
To succeed as a Senior Systems Engineer at Apex Clean Energy, you’ll need to excel within the following criteria:
- Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in a sysadmin, infrastructure, or network engineering role
- Deep understanding of Windows Server environments, Active Directory, and enterprise networking
- Experience with virtualization (VMware, XCP-ng), backup/recovery solutions, and storage systems
- Proficiency in scripting and automation
- Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and best practices
- Comfortable supporting mixed environments including Windows, Linux, and cloud platforms
- Strong troubleshooting skills and a proactive mindset
- The ability to rapidly understand a very diverse set of sites and systems
- Have a solid commitment to getting the job done when you are on the critical path
- Be able to flex and adapt to rapidly changing situations
Preferred Qualifications:- Certifications such as:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate or similar
- Cisco CCNA/CCNP
- CompTIA Security+ or equivalent
- Experience in an energy, manufacturing, or critical infrastructure setting
- Exposure to SCADA/OT systems
