Job Description


Apex is seeking a Business Development Director of Acquisitions and Partnerships who will be responsible for leading the acquisition of renewable energy projects in both early and later stage development. In this role you will conduct outreach to other renewable energy development companies, originate opportunities, and manage deal negotiation, due diligence, and financial analysis with the support of Apex subject matter experts. You will also present opportunities and recommendations to Apex senior management, Board Members, and manage across departments as well as 2 direct reports.

This position will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Business Development and will work closely with other departments within Apex, including New Markets, Resource Assessment, Transmission, Development, Permitting, Finance, and Legal. This position is located in Charlottesville, Virginia and requires travel up to 25%.

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Identify and build relationships with renewable energy development companies, investment banks, advisors, consultants, and other industry participants
  • Manage the Phase I Indicative and Phase II Final diligence, valuation, and proposal process for new opportunities with support from multiple departments
  • Perform financial analysis and valuation of Phase I opportunities
  • Manage the drafting of Investment Memorandums and make proposals and presentations to Apex senior management and Board of Directors as required
  • Work with counterparties and Apex legal, business development, and finance teams to negotiate definitive documentation
  • Support the transition of projects into Apex development portfolio
  • Perform other duties as requested

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is required with a preference for concentrations in Business, Finance, Economics or a related field. Master’s degree or MBA strongly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of business development experience in the renewable energy industry
  • At least 3 years of prior experience in business development, investment banking, project finance, or financial analysis in the energy sector preferred
  • Confident leading the execution of acquisitions including an in-depth understanding of deal structures, deal mechanics, financing, and diligence efforts
  • Experience with renewable energy project finance with an ability to understand and manipulate project financial models to perform indicative valuations
  • Must possess excellent attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to productively take ownership of projects while communicating collaboratively throughout the project’s life cycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and lead multi-disciplinary teams while earning buy-in from team members to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of projects
  • Comfortable interfacing successfully with internal and external customers and teammates at all levels within the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, especially Excel and Power Point. Experience using Smartsheet a plus
  • Articulate with the ability to lead and assist with management, client, and public presentations, exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Willing to travel as required up to 25%
