Job Description

Apex is seeking a renewable energy market analyst with strong knowledge of renewable energy markets, policies, and technologies to join our team as a Business Development Analyst, Distributed Energy Resources (DER). In this role, you will utilize exceptional modeling skills, quantitative analysis, policy analysis, research and communication skills to evaluate and vet DER markets throughout the US in order to drive the business plan for Apex DER. This position reports directly to the Vice President of DER, and represents an opportunity for exposure to a wide range of topics and stakeholders active in shaping and growing DER. The position requires top-notch cross-functional skills with responsibilities focused on quantitative market and financial analysis, DER customer-driven analysis, policy research, and strategic decision-making. In this role, you will provide expert analysis and insight of DER markets, policy, and economics to support business development and project development, ultimately resulting in capital deployment. In addition, you will be directly responsible for both market- and project-level modeling, customer savings analysis, market risk assessment, and preparing responses to bid opportunities. As part of a small but growing team, you will wear many hats and will need to be comfortable with balancing many priorities and operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment. Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of DER fundamentals
    • Perform detailed research and analysis on key market drivers and demand
    • Monitor market developments and provide analysis of critical changes
  • Manage modeling and analysis of specified DER markets to support investment decisions, business planning, strategic planning, and new business opportunities o
  • Maintain centralized models and datasets used to support market analysis
    • Monitor and track key regulatory changes within specific markets
    • Translate model outputs into business insights and strategies
  • Support business development processes by developing customized solutions for DER customers o Perform advanced energy savings calculations and other economic analyses
    • Educate and articulate DER concepts to internal and external stakeholders

Success Profile

To succeed as a Business Development Analyst at Apex Clean Energy, you’ll need to excel within the following criteria:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics or in a related field
  • 3+ years professional experience in the renewable energy space
  • Advanced Excel modeling skills
  • Broad knowledge of US power industry structures, policies, regulations, and market fundamentals
  • Familiarity with recent trends in renewables, to include energy storage and distributed energy resources
  • In-depth understanding of economic valuation such as NPV and IRR analysis, and utility cost effectiveness tests
  • Experience responding to competitive solicitations
  • Ability to assist with management and internal presentations
  • Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively and cross-departmentally.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to manage time to meet frequently changing deadlines in a rapidly changing environment.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline
  • 5+ years professional experience in the DER space
  • High level of quantitative & analytical skills with relevant work experience providing quantitative analysis, electricity market modeling, consulting and/or energy trading Knowledge of energy policy and regulation, especially related to DER
  • Experience in regulatory and public stakeholder processes would be highly valued Experience with business development and client development
  • Experience with energy modeling tools (e.g., OpenStudio, EnergyPlus)
  • Advanced programming and data analytics skills (Python, VBA, SQL, or other programming skills)
  • Knowledge of building construction methods, mechanical systems and related energy use in residential and commercial construction

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
