Role Purpose:


In An Post sustainability informs every aspect of our business, every single day, enabling us to deliver benefits to our employees, our customers and the communities we serve. Reporting to the Chief Sustainability Officer and working in a high-performing team, the Senior Sustainability Manager is central to the implementation of the An Post sustainability strategy across An Post Group. In this role, you will act as a subject matter expert on all aspects of sustainability to enable the realisation of An Post’s ambitious sustainability strategy and commitments.


An Post aims to continue to lead the sustainability agenda at a national level and the Senior Sustainability Manager ensures An Post is at the forefront of innovation and implementation.


Working with support from the Sustainability Manager, the Senior Sustainability Manager requires proven leadership and implementation skills and proactive cross-functional collaboration to lead strategy implementation across the business. Additionally, industry leadership and external representation of the An Post strategy will be required to progress An Post’s ambitious strategy.


This role is integral to advancing An Post's sustainability agenda, requiring a dynamic individual committed to making positive environmental and social impact at scale.


Responsibilities:


The principal accountabilities include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Working with the Chief Sustainability Officer and Sustainability Programme Manager to develop and set the sustainability strategy and to design sustainability initiatives to deliver against strategic objectives.
  • Working closely with the Sustainability Programme Manager to deliver against the sustainability programme roadmap, and to have overall oversight of progress against targets and objectives.
  • Monitoring emerging global and industry trends in sustainability reporting, legislation, innovation and regulation and developing strategies to maximise opportunities and minimise risk while bringing in best practices gathered from external sources.
  • Responsible for the An Post organisational carbon footprint and associated reporting, including the calculation and ongoing tracking of scope 1, 2 and 3 footprint for An Post Group.
  • Managing the development and implementation of the An Post climate strategy including the climate transition plan and risk assessment, Climate Action Framework, and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), An Post’s organisational carbon footprint and internal carbon pricing.
  • Leading the strategic initiatives central to the An Post strategy including the circular economy, biodiversity strategy, packaging and social/community initiatives.
  • Overseeing alignment with sustainability reporting frameworks at domestic, industry, EU and international levels, including GRI and CSRD.
  • Collaborating cross functionally with the An Post transport and property teams to drive decarbonisation initiatives aligned to the overall strategy, and keeping An Post at the forefront of innovation and best practice.
  • Ensuring relevant An Post Policies are maintained and up to date with the latest compliance information required.
  • Liaising with the Procurement team to develop policies to manage supply chain risk and proactively engage our suppliers to ensure consistency with our sustainability values and standards.
  • Building relationships with international Posts and acting as the company’s sustainability representative at industry meetings to share best practice.
  • Building relationships with market leaders, academics, advisors and partners to ensure we remain at the forefront of sustainability developments, managing them on relevant engagements.
  • Working cross-functionally, collaborating with stakeholders and colleagues to integrate sustainability into business activities.
  • Developing and delivering internal sustainability training programmes as required, including the employee engagement programme.
  • Preparing material for senior executives representing An Post at external sustainability meetings and events, standing in where required, to help bring our sustainability journey to life.
  • Advocating and actively demonstrating An Post core values and behaviours.


Knowledge and Experience:


The successful candidate will hold a relevant third level degree in a sustainability related discipline.You will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a sustainability role, ideally within a large and complex organisational environment, with at least two years at a senior level. You will also ideally bring previous commercial or operational experience, together with strong business acumen and the ability to identify and demonstrate the business case for sustainability across the organisation.


You will have a strong knowledge of local, regional and global sustainability reporting frameworks and the ability to interpret evolving regulatory and compliance requirements. With strong attention to detail, you will be able to manage complex data sets and identify and resolve data discrepancies to support accurate sustainability reporting.


You will have excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills with a proven track record of working with operational or commercial teams to implement sustainability initiatives, translating strategy into practical actions that deliver measurable environmental and business outcomes.

Excellent organisational and project management skills will enable you to manage multiple reporting deadlines simultaneously and to coordinate complex projects with multiple input channels and stakeholders.


You are a confident communicator with advanced presentation and report writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex sustainability topics clearly to both internal and external audiences while fostering a culture of collaboration across the organisation.

  • Technical / Professional Knowledge (Sustainability): Deep understanding and knowledge on sustainability related topics, including evolving technology and innovation.
  • Critical thinking: Ability to critically assess complex data and tends to identify optimal solutions for An Post and other stakeholders.
  • Commercial Awareness: Ability to understand operational drivers and translate sustainability objectives into practical, value-creating business initiatives
