Junior – Intermediate ESD / Sustainability Consultant - Melbourne (South-East)

This role sits within a growing sustainability consultancy working across the built environment, partnering closely with architects, designers, and developers to deliver practical, well-considered ESD outcomes.

It’s not a large, multi-layered consultancy and that’s very much the point.

Instead of being one of many in a big team, you’ll work directly with the Directors, take on responsibility earlier, and gain exposure that’s often hard to come by in larger organisations. Your work will be seen, your input will matter, and your development won’t be slowed down by hierarchy.

The opportunity

This is a junior to intermediate-level role suited to someone already working in ESD or sustainability consulting who wants to accelerate their learning and broaden their experience.

You’ll be involved across the full project lifecycle, supporting and delivering ESD assessments, modelling, reporting, and client coordination across a range of building types. Over time, you’ll build confidence in running elements of projects yourself, engaging with clients, and contributing to more complex sustainability strategies.

The environment is collaborative, hands-on, and focused on real skill development rather than narrow task allocation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Assisting with and delivering ESD assessments for planning and building permit stages
  • Preparing supporting reports such as BESS, STORM, SDA, SMP, and WSUD
  • Undertaking energy and daylight modelling using DesignBuilder or similar tools
  • Supporting broader sustainability strategies across a variety of projects
  • Working closely with senior team members and Directors on project delivery
  • Building confidence in client communication and project coordination

About you

  • Around 1–3+ years’ experience in ESD or sustainability consulting within the built environment
  • Exposure to BESS and STORM assessments and planning-stage sustainability reporting
  • Experience with energy modelling software such as DesignBuilder (or similar)
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • An interest in areas such as Green Star, Net Zero pathways, climate adaptation, or lifecycle thinking

You don’t need to tick every box. If you have a solid foundation and the right attitude, there’s room to grow into the role.

Why this role stands out

  • Direct access to Directors and senior decision-makers
  • Faster progression and broader responsibility than a large consultancy environment
  • Genuine mentoring and hands-on learning
  • Exposure across different project types, not just one narrow stream
  • A supportive team that’s invested in developing your career, not just filling a seat

If you’re early in your sustainability career and want meaningful experience, real responsibility, and a clear development path, this is well worth a conversation.
