Climate Portfolio Manager
Purpose Of Position
The First Vice President, Climate Portfolio Manager, is responsible for senior-level oversight of the risk management and performance of the Bank’s climate and project finance portfolio. This role serves as a senior portfolio and credit leader within the Climate Lending platform, applying independent judgment to complex renewable energy relationships, providing guidance to junior staff, and ensuring portfolio practices align with the Bank’s risk appetite and regulatory expectations.
In addition to managing a portfolio of complex or higher-risk relationships, this role leads portfolio onboarding, covenant and contractual compliance, performance monitoring, financial oversight, and the identification of emerging risks. The role also strengthens portfolio management practices, improves tools and processes, and represents the Climate PM function in internal governance, audit, and regulatory contexts.
The position requires strong renewable energy and project finance expertise, sound credit judgment, demonstrated leadership, and the ability to work independently and influence outcomes across multiple stakeholders.

Hybrid Work Model

Essential Job Functions
- Senior Portfolio Oversight and Risk Leadership
- Provide senior-level oversight of portfolio risk, asset performance, cash flow trends, covenant compliance, and emerging issues across the climate finance portfolio.
- Independently evaluate complex renewable energy credits, project structures, operating performance, and non-routine issues.
- Review and challenge complex credit recommendations, risk ratings, covenant compliance, and exception requests, and make well-supported recommendations within delegated authority.
- Serve as a senior escalation point for portfolio issues, including underperforming assets, covenant concerns, and criticized relationships.
- Lead development of risk mitigation and remediation strategies, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders as needed.
- Ensure portfolio management practices are consistent with Bank policy, applicable regulatory requirements, contractual obligations, and industry best practices.
- Credit Expertise and Decision Influence
- Provide expert guidance on renewable energy financing structures, covenant frameworks, contractual requirements, and risk identification.
- Challenge assumptions in underwriting, operating budgets, cash flow forecasts, and portfolio management to strengthen overall credit quality and asset performance.
- Contribute to policy interpretation and recommend enhancements to credit and portfolio management standards where appropriate.
- Represent the Climate PM perspective in internal credit committees, governance forums, audits, examinations, and cross-functional discussions.
- Perform independent research and analysis on renewable energy markets, regulatory developments, and portfolio performance trends.
- Leadership and Talent Development
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to more junior portfolio managers and other team members.
- Review work product for quality, consistency, sound judgment, and appropriate consideration of credit, operational, and contractual risks.
- Support performance development by providing feedback and reinforcing expectations.
- Promote strong collaboration, accountability, and professional standards across the team.
- Process Improvement and Strategic Contribution
- Identify opportunities to enhance portfolio management tools, reporting, onboarding, covenant tracking, and workflows.
- Partner with internal stakeholders, including Credit Administration, Risk, Technology, Legal, and Finance, to improve systems, reporting, and data integrity.
- Contribute to broader strategic initiatives related to climate finance, renewable energy asset performance, and risk management.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including involvement in complex new originations, portfolio transitions, and asset onboarding.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field; an advanced degree or professional certification (MBA, CRC, CFA, or CPA) is preferred.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in renewable energy, commercial banking, project finance, structured finance, asset management, or climate lending.
- Demonstrated expertise in renewable energy financing structures, project finance risk analysis, financial modeling, operating budgets, and actual cash flow performance against pro forma expectations.
- Proven ability to exercise independent judgment on complex renewable energy transactions, operating assets, and non-routine portfolio matters.
- Experience reviewing and challenging credit or investment work, including risk assessments, covenant structures, performance trends, and exception requests.
- Experience identifying underperforming assets and developing risk mitigation or remediation plans; direct workout or criticized asset experience is preferred.
- Strong understanding of loan documentation, covenant compliance, portfolio risk governance, and applicable banking and renewable energy regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability to influence outcomes across relationship managers, underwriters, credit administration, investors, legal counsel, consultants, utilities, tax equity providers, O&M providers, and senior stakeholders.
- Experience building, mentoring, coaching, or formally leading teams and junior professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to identify systemic risks, improve onboarding and monitoring processes, and contribute to portfolio-level strategy.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex credit, financial, operational, and contractual matters to senior audiences.
- High proficiency in financial modeling, budget-to-actual analysis, data interpretation, covenant tracking, and portfolio reporting.
