Mission

In this role, you will be responsible for developing and executing trading strategies across European short-term power markets, with a particular focus on the UK market. While acting as a specialist for Great Britain (GB) power trading, you will actively participate in the trading and optimization of Alpiq's wider European portfolio covering Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and the Nordic power markets. The role combines UK market specialization with broader participation in Alpiq's CWE and Nordic trading activities.

You will be joining a team of experienced traders and algo traders operating across Europe on a 7/7-day shift basis during extended working hours. The team is responsible for proprietary trading activities as well as the optimization of renewable assets and batteries from DA down to balancing markets. Working closely with analysts, quantitative researchers, meteorologists, IT developers and our 24/7 intraday desk, you will contribute to maximizing value creation in increasingly automated and data-driven power markets.

Your Main Responsibilities

  • Trade a virtual power plant portfolio of wind/solar in DE, FR, FI, SE on a 7/7-day shift basis in Intraday and Day Ahead market
  • Act as the in-house expert for UK short-term power markets, bringing deep knowledge of Day-Ahead, Intraday, balancing and flexibility market dynamics.
  • Develop and execute proprietary trading strategies across UK, CWE and Nordic power markets, with a particular focus on UK market opportunities arising from renewable penetration, system imbalances, storage assets and transmission constraints.
  • Contribute to the commercial development and optimization of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the UK market by identifying monetization opportunities, trading strategies and route-to-market solutions across wholesale, balancing and ancillary service markets.
  • Provide market expertise on battery economics, congestion management opportunities, revenue stacking and short-term optimization strategies.
  • Manage the risk exposure of proprietary trading positions in accordance with internal mandates, risk policies and trading limits.
  • Monitor and analyse market fundamentals including weather developments, generation forecasts, renewable production, demand forecasts, fuel prices, interconnector flows and balancing market signals.
  • Contribute to the development, testing and implementation of algorithmic trading strategies together with Alpiq's algo trading and quantitative teams.
  • Participate in the conceptualization and continuous improvement of automated trading services, forecasting models, workflow automation and analytical tools.
  • Perform daily assessment of trading performance through P&L analysis, strategy reviews and back-testing of trading decisions.
  • Prepare regular trading performance reports and communicate market developments, opportunities and strategic recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Share market knowledge, best practices and trading insights with colleagues across the trading organization and support onboarding of new team members.
  • Collaborate closely with originators, pricing and quantitative analysts, developers, risk managers, operations and middle-office teams to improve overall trading performance.
  • Help further develop Alpiq's position as a leading player in short-term power trading across the UK, Central Western Europe and Nordic power markets.

While serving as the UK's market expert within the desk, you will contribute to the overall performance of the CWE & Nordics short-term trading team. Your ability to connect developments in the UK market with dynamics across Continental Europe and the Nordics will help capture cross-market opportunities and strengthen Alpiq's pan-European trading capabilities.

Your profile

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in engineering, Economics, IT or similar
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in power trading with proven expertise in UK Day-Ahead and Intraday power markets.
  • Demonstrated experience in Renewables trading and in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), flexibility markets or battery optimization strategies within the UK market.
  • Understanding of European Short Term Power markets.
  • Knowledge of French, Belgian and Dutch power markets is a strong advantage, given their close interaction with UK interconnector flows.
  • Strong analytical skills with a strategic mindset
  • Open-minded, multi-tasking and used to working in a fast paced, high-pressure environment
  • Strong Team-player and problem-solver
  • Excellent commercial mind-set and very good communicator
  • Good programming and IT skills (ideally Python).
  • Experience with algorithmic and systematic trading using automated trading environments is considered a strong advantage.
  • Strong interest in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics to enhance trading performance.
  • Proficient level of English.
