Transmission Planning Engineer / Senior Transmission Planning Engineer

Location: Hybrid – Oakland, CA (Relocation available)

About the Role:

We are seeking talented Transmission Planning Engineers (Journey & Senior levels) to join our Transmission System Planning (TSP) team. These roles are critical to ensuring a safe, reliable, and efficient electric grid that supports renewable integration, distributed energy, and future expansion — while maintaining compliance with industry reliability standards.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on experience level, responsibilities may include:

Transmission Planning & Studies

  • Develop and recommend comprehensive transmission plans to ensure grid reliability, safety, and efficiency.
  • Perform power flow, stability, and interconnection studies for new generation, distributed energy, and storage projects.
  • Contribute to or lead generation interconnection and deliverability studies.

Modeling & Analysis

  • Prepare and validate base cases, transmission system models, and load forecasts.
  • Review and develop simulation models for transmission lines, substations, and advanced equipment (e.g., HVDC).
  • Create and enhance automation tools using Python, Matlab, VBA, or EPCL .

Compliance & Industry Engagement

  • Ensure studies and planning activities meet NERC/WECC/CAISO compliance requirements.
  • Support or lead filings with regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in internal/external meetings, workgroups, and industry forums to represent organizational interests.

Project & Team Leadership (for Senior level)

  • Lead the development of Annual Transmission Planning Assessments & Expansion Plans.
  • Provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams (Engineering, Operations, Substation, Distribution Planning).
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, guiding their professional development.
  • Lead implementation of complex transmission projects requiring regulatory approvals.

What We’re Looking For

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related).
  • Experience:
  • Mid-level: 3+ years in transmission planning, power systems, or operations.
  • Senior level: 8+ years with proven expertise in system planning, modeling, or compliance.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
  • Strong understanding of power system theory and reliability standards (NERC/WECC) .
  • Hands-on experience with load flow tools (GE PSLF or similar) .
  • Programming/scripting (Python, Matlab, VBA, EPCL) for automation and analysis.
  • Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Preferred (Senior level): PE license, Master’s degree, and experience with HVDC or advanced modeling methods.
