Senior Mechanical Engineer
About AirJoule, LLC
Are you passionate about making a difference in the fight against climate change? Then AirJoule is the place for you! We are a joint venture between GE Vernova and Montana Technologies, and a leader in the global sustainability transition. Our revolutionary atmosphere water harvesting technology enable transformative HVAC products that help our customers save money on their energy bills while reducing their environmental impact. The same core technology also enables atmospheric water harvesting products that create clean, abundant, and decentralized water for industrial, commercial, and humanitarian purposes.
Position Summary
The Senior Design Engineer (Mechanical) will lead the design, development, and optimization of complex mechanical and electromechanical systems from concept through production. This role requires deep expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for excellence (DFX) to deliver robust, scalable, and cost-effective products.
This position also owns and drives Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) / Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), ensuring controlled, accurate, and timely design changes across the product lifecycle. You will collaborate closely with electrical, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to transition designs into reliable, production-ready products.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Development
- Lead the end-to-end mechanical design of components, subassemblies, and systems using 3D CAD models and detailed 2D drawings.
- Apply DFM, DFA, and DFX principles to simplify assemblies, reduce part count, improve manufacturability, and lower cost.
- Own tolerance analysis, GD&T application, and critical interface definitions to ensure fit, form, and function.
- Select materials and manufacturing processes suitable for performance, cost, and scalability (machining, sheet metal, injection molding, die casting, additive manufacturing).
- Collaborate with electrical, controls, and systems engineers to ensure seamless electromechanical integration.
- Create, review, and maintain BOMs, drawings, and engineering documentation within PLM/PDM systems.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on design best practices and standards.
Design Validation, Change Control & Technical Excellence
- Lead prototype builds and support design verification and validation testing.
- Perform or review mechanical analyses (stress, thermal, vibration) using FEA or equivalent tools.
- Initiate, evaluate, and manage ECRs/ECOs, including impact analysis on cost, schedule, tooling, inventory, quality, and supply chain.
- Ensure design changes are properly reviewed, approved, documented, and released in accordance with configuration management processes.
- Participate in and lead design reviews, FMEA, root cause analysis, and corrective action initiatives.
- Work with suppliers and contract manufacturers to incorporate DFM/DFA feedback and drive continuous improvement.
Manufacturing & Production Support
- Lead design transfer activities to manufacturing, supporting pilot builds and production ramp-up.
- Support tooling, fixture, and assembly process development.
- Provide hands-on support during pilot and early production builds, troubleshooting fit, tolerance, and assembly issues.
- Drive cost-reduction and value-engineering initiatives through controlled design changes.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or related field.
- Minimum Experience: 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and product development.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks (preferred), NX, Creo, or Inventor.
- Strong working knowledge of ECR/ECO processes, configuration management, and change control in a production environment.
- Proven experience assessing and implementing engineering changes with cross-functional approval.
- Deep understanding of DFM, DFA, DFX, and GD&T principles.
- Experience with manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, and casting.
- Ability to generate and maintain accurate 2D drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
Preferred Experience
- Industry experience in HVAC, automotive, medical devices, electromechanical systems, or thermal/mechanical products.
- Familiarity with PLM/PDM platforms (SolidWorks PDM, Teamcenter, Windchill, or equivalent).
- Experience working directly with suppliers and contract manufacturers on design changes and production issues.
- Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication, testing, and failure analysis.
- Exposure to sustainability-driven DFX (design for serviceability, recyclability, lifecycle cost).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft office.
- Strong organizational, analytical, detail-oriented and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Core Competencies & Soft Skills
- Strong attention to detail and disciplined approach to change management.
- Clear, effective communicator across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams.
- Self-driven, organized, and capable of managing multiple ECRs in parallel.
- Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and product excellence.
Other Requirements
- Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. AirJoule is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
