Sustainability Specialist
Position: Lead- Sustainability Assurance
Location: Mumbai
Reporting: Head Sustainability Assurance
Business Unit: ABMCPL
Purpose
We are looking for an Assurance SME to own; how a global manufacturing group audits and verifies itself on safety, health, and environmental performance. You will design and run the assurance programme that decides which sites' claims get independently checked, translate technical safety and environmental data into a credible group-wide scoring system, and make sure our approach can stand up to scrutiny from international assurance standards, not just internal ones.
This is a hybrid technical/governance role: part safety and environmental subject-matter expert, part audit-programme owner, part standards translator. You'll work across multiple manufacturing businesses (chemicals, metals, building materials, and more), each with different risk profiles, and build one coherent, defensible assurance approach across all of them.
What You'll Do
- Own the scoring, tiering, and verification logic behind the group's self-assessment and external audit programme for EHS and sustainability.
- Make sure safety and environmental claims are backed by real evidence, not just paperwork, including spot-checking data quality on things like exposure monitoring and emissions results.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and verification bodies, and decide which sites get independently checked each cycle.
- Benchmark and align the programme against recognised international assurance frameworks, and close any gaps you find.
- Build competence standards and training for the people running assessments at each site.
- Report programme health, findings, and risk trends to senior leadership and the sustainability governance committee.
What You'll Bring
- 10–15+ years in EHS, industrial hygiene, process safety, or sustainability assurance, including leading an audit or assurance function across multiple sites.
- Solid grounding in process safety and occupational hygiene methods (risk assessments, hazard studies, exposure limits), enough to challenge evidence, not just review scores.
- Experience with a recognised audit or assurance standard (e.g., ISO management-system auditing, sustainability assurance standards) and comfort translating between internal company standards and external expectations.
- Manufacturing sector experience; multi-sector exposure is a strong plus given the breadth of this role.
- A formal auditor qualification is preferred, or a stated willingness to obtain one.
Why This Role
You'll have genuine influence over how a large industrial group proves, to itself and to the outside world, that its safety and sustainability claims are real. It's a rare combination of technical depth, programme ownership, and governance visibility, with a direct line to senior sustainability leadership.
