Head of R&D | Exciting deeptech startup
9N is pioneering a new class of modular carbon-conversion technology that transforms non-recyclable plastics and carbon-rich residues into high-value engineered carbon materials. Our mission is to build scalable systems that decarbonise industry, close material loops and power the next generation of clean, high-performance applications.
We are now hiring a Chief Science Officer to lead the scientific heart of 9N and shape the entire technical journey from concept to commercial reality.
What You Will Lead
• Guide the full scientific and technical direction of our carbon-conversion process
• Oversee MVP development, validation, performance testing and cost modelling
• Drive the integration of AI into our process control, optimisation and predictive systems
• Coordinate and manage work with external labs, universities and scientific partners
• Build and maintain the company’s technical documentation, white papers and patent strategy
• Translate complex data into clear, credible scientific narratives for investors
• Represent 9N’s technology in investor calls and external meetings
• Be a hands-on problem solver who enjoys experimentation, iteration and innovation
What You Bring
• PhD in Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Graphene, Chemical Engineering, Advanced Materials or similar
• Proven experience developing advanced materials or carbon-based systems
• Strong ability to turn lab-scale research into manufacturable processes
• Comfortable with patent drafting, scientific writing and IP strategy
• Experience collaborating with external research groups or scientific institutions
• Someone who enjoys building, testing, and pushing the boundary of new materials in real time
• Excitement for deeptech, climate tech and building the future rather than observing it
Why Join 9N
• You will be the scientific engine behind a technology with real global impact
• Work alongside a sharp, fast, founder-led team in a company built for scale
• Full ownership across scientific direction and R&D strategy
• A role for someone who wants to build, not just advise
• Competitive salary upon funding and revenue milestones
• Substantial equity from day one
• Full time or part time
• Preferably based in Manchester
