The Balance of Plant Civil/Structural Engineering Manager will provide leadership to a diverse technical team of engineers and scientists focused on the oversight of the design and development of BOP structures (Turbine Building, Radwaste Building, Control/Auxiliary Building), the application of those structures to specific opportunities, and early site characterization work needed to develop those projects.
In this role you will be responsible for design planning, coordination, and oversight of building requirements for product development work and project-specific applications. You will coordinate with internal engineering teams and external engineering and construction partners. For early site characterization work, this includes planning and coordination of on-site activities. You will oversee the team ensuring all aspects of the project align with engineering and design specifications, industry standards, and construction regulations. You will also foster effective technical communication by liaising with contractors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Report to the Senior Manager Advanced Applications Engineering – Systems Engineering.
• Own and be accountable for providing technical guidance on standard plant design, site-specific customer requirements, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain ownership and accountability from initial requirement setting and conceptual engineering through final design, construction, and plant turnover to the customer. Manage interfaces with partners and suppliers in support of the nuclear portfolio.
• Work closely with other engineering disciplines to coordinate plant design performance, layout, interference resolution, and system design.
• Ensure design intent and requirements are captured and documented.
• Provide technical and managerial leadership for a diverse team and ensure on-time delivery of design products within budget.
• Inspire, hire, coach, and develop technical and leadership talent within the team.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal engineering managers, business leaders, project managers, and stakeholders.
• Interface with external partners, customers, and country-specific regulatory agencies on technical issues as required.
• Lead performance and program management to ensure fulfillment of engineering commitments in accordance with contract requirements, business procedures, industry standards, and regulatory guidelines.
• Plan, organize, and manage technical activities supporting engineering deliverables.
• Guide and manage external resources to ensure quality deliverables and cost efficiency.
• Support commercial and marketing opportunities to develop new business.
• Protect intellectual property rights.
• Support organizational initiatives, process improvement, and simplification.
• Support nuclear quality requirements including participation in design reviews and corrective actions.
• Ensure adherence to nuclear safety and compliance standards.
• Apply Lean principles to streamline and integrate technical information sharing across teams and partners.
• Present product strategies, technical roadmaps, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering discipline or similar.
• Minimum 10 years direct experience in power plant design and construction.
• Minimum 10 years of direct design, development, and deployment experience of power plants for complex, high-reliability, and harsh environment facilities in power, process, or marine industries.
• Minimum 3 years of proven experience managing and directing an engineering team of 10-20 persons.
Desired Qualifications:
• Licensed Professional Engineer – US, Canada, or other.
• Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in power plant design-related discipline.
• Working knowledge of USA, Canada, and EU codes and standards.
• Working knowledge of geotechnical testing and reporting.
• Working knowledge of grading, drainage, and excavation design.
• Working knowledge of structural design and analysis for steam turbine foundations and buildings.
• Working knowledge of structural design and analysis for control and electrical buildings.
• EPC experience in power plant projects.
• Understanding of nuclear industry and technology.
• Strong project management capabilities.
